Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Long.
Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a Southwestern Girl! I was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’ve now been in Atlanta on and off for nearly 20 years.
After graduating from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism — I closed my eyes pointed at a map and landed on Atlanta, Georgia. It turned out to be the perfect place to begin my career in entertainment. I knew right away that I had developed a love for business, engaging people and telling stories — ideal for sales and marketing.
I took on roles with major brands like STARZ Entertainment and The Weather Channel and then transitioned to Los Angeles (thanks to an amazing mentor, William Mitchell) working for MTV Networks and NUVO TV, where I negotiated distribution agreements in various regions. I spent my final time in Malibu, California completing an MBA in Strategic Management at Pepperdine University.
My path has been pretty dynamic. I’ve touched different corporations, non-profit organizations and ventured to become an entrepreneur. I’m really excited about leading Women in Film and Television Atlanta (WIFTA) as the Executive Director. It is an extraordinary opportunity to be part of the growth happening in film and television in the city. I’ve layered my experience in sales, marketing, journalism, data and technology with a deep understanding of strategy, analytics and organizational growth. And I’m a firm believer in a willingness to challenge the status quo in service of innovation and great ideas.
On the side (if there is such a thing!), I’m a Radio Personality — Shea Love — on KISS 104.1 FM (Saturdays 4-7PM and Sundays 12-4PM). I also manage a voiceover business where I am the voice for The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and have worked on major projects for Publix, AT&T, Amazon Business & Georgia Power. I hold a deep commitment to civic engagement and currently serve as the President of the Dunwoody Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
It’s been a fun ride! Excited for what the future has in store.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Simply. No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had my share of twists and turns — health challenges, divorce, and lots of roadblocks. However, I think it’s about perspective. I see obstacles and challenges as redirection — a steering to a clearer path. So, I am stronger, wiser and braver because of them and I don’t regret a single one!
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
I am so proud to represent an organization that focuses on truly making an impact. We accomplish that by providing unique programming, curated educational and networking opportunities and growing focus on advocacy. Women In Film and Television Atlanta (WIFTA), a 501c-3 Georgia non-profit, is a member-based organization for creative media professionals. We are the second oldest Women In Film chapter worldwide. With a focus on driving the advancement of women in the TV / Film industry, WIFTA provides a dynamic network for facilitating the exchange of ideas, sharing opportunities and accelerating the professional development of our members. This is a key reason why we are “Georgia’s foremost entertainment industry organization in support of women.”
Since our inception in 1974, WIFTA has proudly had a membership community of multi-generational and culturally diverse professionals – women and men. Our membership is comprised of professionals who work as (or strive to be) producers, directors, actors, entertainment attorneys, camera and sound technicians, film editors, graphic designers, make-up artists, wardrobe specialists, screenwriters, talent agents and casting directors. Our membership also includes businesses and organizations interested in supporting and promoting the creativity and skills that women bring to all screen-based media.
WIFTA is affiliated with 40+ Women In Film chapters around the world as well as the Women In Film umbrella organization known as Women In Film International (WIFTI).
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
An unwavering vision. I recently read heard this quote — “Stop letting blind people proofread your vision.” It struck me because that is one thing that is truly unique about the path that we’re on. I truly believe that it is important to remain dedicated to our own individual vision and purpose.
