Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Norman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up I never imagined becoming a photographer. I truly thought I was supposed to be a teacher. Once I started the education program in college, I realized that was not where I wanted to be. I wanted to inspire and be creative, but I wanted something that I could have control of. I graduated with a degree in business and started interning with a local photography studio. I quit my full-time job ten years ago, started my company, and have not looked back.
I live for moments. I cry during every daddy-daughter dance at a wedding and I cry even bigger tears when a mama holds her new infant for the first time. Having the honor to capture those moments makes my career even more than what I could imagine it to be. When I’m behind the camera, I prefer the flow of letting the session take its own course. Direction is one thing, but when you’re caught in the moment, THAT is what makes the photo.
Other than loving what I do for almost ten years, I am addicted to coffee, cupcakes, and my puppy. I am married to the love of my life, a stepmom to the most awesome girl, and a new mama to the most precious little boy. I look for joy in all things that come my way and I couldn’t imagine my life being any different than what it is now.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business, no matter what it is, is hard. Business plans, insurance plans, taxes, and the list goes on. At the beginning, it was rough because of the money that I had to invest into starting the business. So much equipment! So many startup fees. But digging deeper, it was an emotional and mental struggle too. It’s not easy to jump all in and not have a steady income. There is always the thought of failing. What helped me to stay positive and find my success was the support from family and friends that have cheered me on. The clients that have always came back and referred more clients to me that is what makes the success so much sweeter too.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the J. Blanch Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in wedding and portraiture photography. Most clients have expressed how dependable I am and the quality of services that I have provided. Most clients have me as their wedding photographer and then come back when they are starting a family. My very first wedding from nine years ago still has me as their photographer to this day. Just those aspects alone make me very proud of the company that I have built and I think this also sets me apart from other photographers. I hold onto my relationships because for me at the end of day it’s not about the money, it truly is the friendship that I build with the people I photograph. Some would say that is bad business etiquette, but my connection with them is what builds the images that I capture.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Destination weddings are definitely a goal for my company that I hope to see in the next five years. Other than that I really love where I’m at currently in my business.
