Meet Jennifer Yaeger of Sea Glass Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Yaeger.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been practicing for the last 17 years, working primarily with people struggling with anxiety, depression, and trauma. I have always encouraged my clients to engage in several methods of self-care but found that once they left my office, it was difficult to do more than just come to therapy.

I wanted to create a self-care center that would allow my clients, and other individuals, to have a safe, therapeutic environment to participate in various means of self-care in the same space as my office. My sister and I were looking for a place to start this business venture, and we discovered that our great uncle’s building was for rent and was the perfect space. It was just another sign that this business was meant to be.

I decided to name my center Sea Glass Therapy because sea glass is formed when broken and discarded pieces of glass are worked on by the sea and sand to create beautiful and sought-after pieces. We often feel broken and discarded, and when we take on the task of working through our issues and engage in self-care, our beauty can easily shine forth.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Things have definitely fallen into place along the way that I did not expect, necessarily. I would not say smooth road, per se, but it has not yet had too many challenges. I was so worried that I would not be able to find the right practitioners to join our practice, but then people we knew led me to the perfect people.

Our yoga instructor, Rachel, is so therapeutic by nature and strives to help people feel more comfortable in their own skin and achieve the peace that they are attempting to obtain. Our massage therapist, Tanya, is trained in so many healing modalities of massage, including myofascial release, which was exactly what I was hoping to find.

My sister decided to pursue certification as a personal style coach, which has garnered such a demand for her services as well. I am so grateful for these women.

Sea Glass Therapy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As I said, our company is a self-care center, which is a fairly unique concept in our area. We provide individual and couples counseling, as well as several therapy groups including a creative art therapy group, a woman’s group, and a teen group.

We provide a variety of yoga classes that are mostly geared at helping individuals to increase the mind/body connection and decrease anxiety, increasing peace. We have classes that focus on kids, teen girls, seniors, emotional balance, basic poses, restoration, and energetic cardio. We also have a meditation class and partner yoga class that meet once per month.

We provide massage therapy that includes deep tissue, myofascial release, pre/post natal, and medical massage.

We will soon be providing personal style coaching that will help increase confidence in individuals and help them to feel as good on the outside as they do on the inside. Along with that, our personal style coach creates a line of sea glass jewelry that represents our mission.

I am proud that we work hard to help other people to take better care of themselves and increase healing in a variety of methods.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As a therapist, I define success by anything that you do that contributes to your purpose. I think too often people use other people’s definition of success, whether that be from society or family, and we are often doomed to fail if we hold ourselves to another person’s standards.

I also often see that too many people hold themselves to unrealistic standards, which will also perpetuate failure. We have to examine ourselves realistically and evaluate our strengths, weaknesses, talents, and learned skills and then decide what our passion leads us to do with them. If we can do that, success will most likely follow.
