Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Munn.
Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I launched my freelance business in 2009 as a website copywriter. I jumped in not only as a new entrepreneur but also as a professional trying to break into the online marketing world. I launched my website and then waited for clients to come knocking down my door. That didn’t happen.
Instead of a flood of prospects, I got a very slow trickle. It took my husband gently suggesting that maybe I should go back to a 9-5 job for me to get into gear and hustle to learn what it was going to take to generate clients on a regular business.
After conducting target market research, several people told me they hired copywriters by going to Google and searching for “Atlanta copywriters.” So I knew I had to do what it took to get me to the top of Google for these crucial keywords. I taught myself how to optimize my website, and soon I had a busy pipeline of clients who were finding and reaching out to me.
Others started asking me how I did SEO, and soon I was asked to lead workshops training others how to optimize their websites. And thus, my SEO (search engine optimization) and digital marketing consultancy was born.
I worked for a number of different organizations, agencies, and businesses in a wide spectrum of industries over the years. However, one vertical – the K-12 Education Market – soon developed into a passion and emphasis for me.
Today, I partner with K-12 non-profits, advocacy groups, businesses, and private schools to provide a range of search engine marketing and digital marketing solutions to help gain them more visibility and brand awareness online.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Looking back, the early years were the bumpiest, but also the most fun. It’s when I started developing friendships and camaraderie with colleagues, finding mentors and experts who I could follow, going to different events, and continuing to grow as a professional. It’s also when I was head down learning how to make the most impact I could for clients, moving past failures, and celebrating the big wins.
There was always the struggle with not enough time to finish everything on my to-do list. Especially as I was a mom trying to find a healthy balance with three young kids.
After nine years, I can finally say it’s gotten easier!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Munn Group – what should we know?
I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I am so incredibly lucky to have found a profession that is both fulfilling and also allows me freedom for my personal life.
I’m also a big believer in Essentialism, which is the philosophy that you have to sacrifice the “good” to get to the “great.” If you don’t purposefully choose and make decisions in your life, then others will make them for you. And lastly, you have to embrace tradeoffs. This approach has helped me choose a market that inspires me: K-12 Education. The people in this industry all share a common passion for kids, teachers, innovation, and making the world a better place.
It’s this bigger mission that drives me to be the best marketer that I can be to help wonderful organizations get their messages and brands out there. It also aligns perfectly with the world I’m living in personally with my three elementary age children.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am so grateful for colleagues, friends, mentors, and experts in my world who I have learned from and who have inspired me over the years.
