Meet Jeremiah Claybrooks of East Cobb Martial Arts in East Cobb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Claybrooks.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeremiah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2002, I was looking for a fun way to get in shape and always wanted to try martial arts so after training traditional martial arts for a short period I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and quickly became obsessed with it. After training 12 years under Master Eddie Camden, I earned my black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing and even had some MMA fights along the way.

So, fast forward to 2016, my work and personal life get increasingly busier so I wasn’t able to get to the gym as much as I like so after a neighbor’s inquiry about martial arts lessons, I started training folks out of my garage in East Cobb. One guy turned in to 2, 2 guys turned in to 4 and some the guys had children that wanted lessons and I wanted my two daughters to learn Jiu-Jitsu, so East Cobb Martial Arts was born. The gym is located at 2635 Sandy Plains rd in Marietta, just north of Sprayberry high school and two doors down from LaBellas pizza.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No. Like any new business, it’s been hard. But, when you LOVE doing something, it’s not like work. The build out did not go smoothly but with a lot of heart and determination, we prevailed. Also, we’ve been extremely fortunate to have a lot of sign ups lately so just outside our first year anniversary, we’re in a GREAT spot! I’m very grateful.

East Cobb Martial Arts – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a family friendly gym that teach the fundamental disciplines of Mixed Martial Arts to kids and adults for the purposes of self defense, fitness and self improvement. The styles we teach at East Cobb Martial Arts are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing. They are reality based styles of self-defense. They differ from traditional martial art styles like Tae Kwon Do and Karate because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Thai Boxing focus on real life scenarios. There are no forms or katas and we train techniques that have been proven to defend yourself standing up or on the ground.

I’m most proud of our students. Our students work hard, they’re respectful and they are eager to learn. I’m really thankful the gym has attracted such a good people. We are like a family.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by happiness. What’s your “happiness meter.” I’m lucky, my happiness meter soars in the 90 percents! I don’t think you can base happiness purely on money or income. Do you enjoy what you do? Do you have a strong network of friends and family? Are you going to leave this world better than you found it? These are the things I base success on.
