Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Long.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
We’re Jessica & Justin of Jessica Williams Studio, primarily a wedding and events studio although, I do work w graduates and branding clients as well from time to time. I opened the studio in 2010 after successfully failing at my first attempt at life. I was working as a paralegal, making decent money but just overall dissatisfied. I’ve always had an affection for photographs and the art of preserving precious life moments and beautiful landscapes. I remember some of the brightest days of my childhood were the days my mom would give in and allow me to rummage, for hours, through the boxes of old photographs she had tucked away in her closet. I would stare at faces of the people looking back at me, some I’d never even met, and imagine stories of their lives, detailing in my imagination, what their day had been like moments before the image was snapped, what songs they may have had playing in the background, who was on the other end of the telephone they were speaking into, etc. Each image a tiny little time capsule, each one bearing a story of its own. I envisioned that my children would one day do just as I and would daydream about what images would be in my boxes, tucked away in my closet. Knowing that I am able provide the potential for this same experience and preservation of memories to others now, makes my heart full and pushes me ever toward perfecting the craft.
As for Justin, he joined the studio around 2013, after we had been dating for a bit. He comes from a family history of wedding photographers. His Father and Grandfather both photographed weddings as well and instilled in Justin a love for the craft. He is constantly learning and growing and surpassing my expectations and I’m honored to have him as a part of my team.
Please tell us about your art.
Photography, to me, is all about being able to preserve a moment in such a way as to evoke empathy from the viewer. I try to master this by capturing the moment at the right time, with the right composition and proper exposure, when any of these three things are off, by even just a bit, the empathy wanes. I want a collection of images to deliver to a client that will not only allow them to relive the life event they have trusted me to preserve but also a collection of images that will translate across a larger audience.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I believe success a synonym for contentment. Honestly, the most essential thing for me to do to succeed is to continue to put my work out there in spite of the inter voice that strives to convince me I’m a fraud, that my work is not good enough, that I’m not as talented as they, my ideas are garbage, etc.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
