Meet Jessica Vass of Jessica Vass Photography in East Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Vass.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My mom is a graphic designer and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in college. So I grew up making arts and crafts and my mom encouraging my creative ideas. I had the opportunity to go to an incredible high school in College Park called Woodward Academy. They offered a film and darkroom course where we learned how to develop black and white film. We even learned alternative processes like cyanotypes, vandykes, palladiums, and polaroid lift processes. I fell in love with the process. It was very experimental and I enjoyed the hands-on process of creating an image. So I decided to study art in college.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am currently pursuing a BFA with a concentration in Photography at Georgia State University. I have shown work in a few exhibits around town, but I have not tried to photograph commercially. It isn’t something I am extremely interested in right now. There is a lot of freedom with fine art because I get to tell the stories I want to tell; however, there is a lot of unknowns in the fine art world. I will graduate soon, and I am unsure if I want the uncertainty of this career. I am only 21 so I know I have a lot of time to figure to what I truly want to do, but I know that no matter what path I choose I will never stop making art.

Please tell us about Jessica Vass Photography.
I am in the process of making images about my personal experience as a female using collected objects. This work approaches topics about achievement, family, and the challenges of girlhood. It is a way for me to comprehend my adolescence and interpret what it means to be a girl. I have also recently felt drawn to photograph my family, my twin brother in particular. I am in such a transitional period of life where I am developing my own beliefs and learning how to make decisions without my families impositions. Most of my family lives in other states. This strange separation is encouraging me to make work about my connection to my family.

I am probably most known for being extremely motivated. I do a lot of different things in the creative world. I am an Associate Producer for Hales Photo, work as a photography assistant, manage several Instagram accounts, and am a Production Manager for a film program at a high school. All while I make my own work. I am very proud of everything I do and am thankful that many people have invested in me.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I am not sure if I would have done anything differently. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I went to an art school as opposed to a state university. But I really love school and learning. I enjoy my classes in psychology, math, and such. I also received the Hope scholarship, so it is a great financial choice. I have been able to take part in a lot of great opportunities because of GSU like studying abroad and working for companies like Hales Photo.
