Meet Jessie Adams of Big Cat Tattoo in Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Adams.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had a love for tattoos for as long as I can remember. I grew up drawing and painting and eventually started getting tattooed. I would always draw up the ideas I had and take them to the tattoo shop. The shop was fairly new and I think they were looking for free help. So that’s when they offered me an apprenticeship. They knew I could somewhat draw and figured I could use a mop. That’s when the journey began, lots of cleaning and drawing.

After about eight months or so I started practicing on pigskin. About a year in I was allowed to start tattooing my very trusting friends. The apprenticeship was far from smiles and rainbows. It was extremely hard work and every move I made was judged pretty harshly. Looking back, I’m very thankful for being brought into the industry this way. It’s not the job for a soft person. After four years, I’m still just trying to figure it out. I absolutely love what I do and couldn’t imagine my life without tattooing.

Has it been a smooth road?
Trial and error. Not every tattoo has been good. Not every client has been a good one. Also being female in the industry has its own set of challenges. Sometimes people aren’t as trusting with a female doing their tattoo. That makes what I do even more rewarding though.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I started working for Big Cat Tattoo about two months ago. I moved to the city from a small town near lake Lanier. I do mostly blackwork tattoos. Lots of floral and ornamental work. I also really enjoy traditional tattoos. Big Cat is about as traditional of a shop as you can get. I love the environment and everyone I work with is like family.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is an amazing place for tattoos. So much diversity within artists. You can find someone to do any style here. For someone starting out, there’s plenty of people and shops to choose from. I don’t think you could ask for much more.

Jessie is an awesome tattoo artist! We live in Northeast Georgia and are close to both the NC and SC lines. We don’t mind the drive at all because she’s worth it! My daughter and I have received eight (8) tattoos from her since March. I get so many compliments on mine as they are quite unique thanks to her amazing talent. My cousin came up from Tallahassee, FL and we went to get a tattoos. She will now drive up to Jessie for all future tattoos.
