Meet Joe Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Brown.

Joe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Joe and I started the indie beach pop band, Also Joe. What started as me sitting alone in my room writing music, turned into the amazing and successful 5-piece band that we are today. The members include Jesse on drums, Wyatt on bass and vocals, Jordan on keys/synth, Paige on flute and vocals, and myself as rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist.

When I was living in Wilmington, North Carolina, Jesse and I moved into a house together with a basement (which is fairly uncommon for a beach town) and we started putting on concerts in the basement for us and our friends. Pretty soon, the ordeal became well known across the state of NC, as well as in other states like PA, SC, and GA. We helped build the music scene from the ground up. And through our ambitions, we have been able to achieve many things musically. Through the connections we’ve been able to build, we’ve had a chance to play on tour, which is was a difficult but exciting journey. We were able to share our story and our music with a huge variety of people. We could bring the beach a little bit more inland.

One thing that I have to say about our music, is that all of the songs are very genuine and honest – all of the music comes straight from our souls and most people who view us live can experience this. I like to be able to connect with people and music is the perfect medium for myself and my band.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in a band is easy and hard at the same time. It’s easy to play on stage, to write music, to record. However, it takes a lot out of you to be marketing yourself in that regard. You’re not marketing a business, but rather yourself – you’re trying to sell yourself and your art to other people. Another thing that can be exhausting is sharing yourself with so many other people. After we play a show, I’m so full of energy yet so emotionally drained at the same time because I put my entire being into the performance.

Please tell us about your music.
I think our music is unique and interesting. We move around on the stage, dance, and even playoff the stage at times. It’s easy to have a good time at our shows. I think one of the proudest moments for me specifically was when a local radio station aired our first single, “Two Straws”. That was an incredible sensation.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think for our success specifically, we depend on our passion for the art – for music. We don’t play to be famous and we don’t play to make money. We do it simply because we love it. Every time we get on the stage, I feel like I’ve become one with everyone else. We’re in such a synchronous union with one another and the music.
