Meet John Dillard, CPA of His CPA in Duluth

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Dillard, CPA.

John established a different kind of CPA firm — one that would bring the principles of Jesus Christ to the practice of Accounting.

Since that time, his practice has been growing, as clients who are seeking a Christian accountant who believes in Christ’s principles take advantage of HIS CPA for their business accounting, personal financial planning, and tax preparation needs.

John, please share your story with us of how you wre let to create a Christian CPA practice to serve Atlanta and Gwinnet County.
Having managed my own successful CPA practice in Gwinnett County for over twenty years, I continued to feel God’s calling on my heart and his desire for me to be more about Him. I had always felt it was my mission to witness to those I came in contact with in both my business and social contacts, but God continued to lay it on my heart that He wanted much more.

Although I was willing to share my Christian faith with people to whom I came in contact with, God was calling and he wanted me to be much more overt, but loving, to share the love of God.

Having practiced the Golden Rule in my CPA firm for years, God was calling to be the true center of my life and not just a major player.

With my new bride that I had met only a few years ago, we set out on a journey that has led us on mission trips, publishing books, changing Georgia law, and starting a new accounting firm, HIS CPA, P.C.

Although we wanted to start the company at the beginning of the year God made it necessary to start the firm immediately as He wanted it done then and not later. To this end we have been faithful and continue to spread the Good News of our faith and Christianity to anyone who would like to hear.

Our faith and our lives intersect. Though we still have much to learn to grow to be like Him, we have studied his word and continue to work in Bible studies to share his love with others. My CPA firm is committed to the One who made me and we act on this daily by “Serving HIM by serving You…one tax return at a time.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest obstacle we each will ever face is the one that we think is “ours” for in reality most/many of life’s challenges are for us to “survive” and not “fix”. I believe the most important thing we can do in the storms that strike our lives is to first be still and consider how you got there, how you contributed, the height and depth of the problem (is it you for someone/something else) and to carefully consider what you might do to begin the process of overcoming. Just as a journey of a lifetime starts with a single step it is even more important when addressing life’s calamities for often our best course is not to “act” but to “ride it out.” For if you believe in a higher power as I do then you have to consider if the God that created the Universe can also address my life issues for always our best steps will be “His” steps and we have to be still and listen to know where to carefully place our feet.

This world is hard at times. Really hard. I have watched businesses suffer, employees lose their positions, spouses die, litigation, hatred, bigotry, children & adults lose their way and marriages struggle and may fail. Many of these obstacles these items create can be greatly mitigated by seeking to offers others grace, support and compassion just as we want for ourselves. For when we lead with love rather than “rules” our whole world changes. Our world is not a “rose garden” but it can smell much sweeter when we are!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Atlanta Virtual CFO advises on tax mitigation, compliance and reporting detailing the “Top Five Ways a Virtual CFO Guides Your Business Economic Engine.”

Yes you can have a CPA advise you solely with tax preparation issues and tax compliance but there are avenues for tax savings and exposure that a Virtual CFO can guide and direct as your business grows and mature.”

Top 5 Ways a Virtual CPA Guides Your Business Economic Engine

1. Anticipation. Many tax preparers are historical in their view, focusing on the past that is already over. Having blazed trials of rapid growing companies in the past, a Virtual CFO is already planning a company’s future steps.

2. Business Savvy. A Virtual CFO of importance will have decades of experience and wisdom to rely upon when making short and long term strategic decisions. Business intelligence in terms of developing all types of agreements including non-competes, compensation plans, business acquisitions and sells agreements are just a few of the varying contractual types a Virtual CFO will have providing the needed depth and breadth and actual know how to get the job done.

3. Business Law. Though a Virtual CFO will never replace an attorney in terms of drafting legal documents he will “know the ropes” in order to best advise a course of action that is the most appropriate in the circumstances. This will do much to avoid miscues while focusing on long term strategic operatives.

4. Financial Interrelationships. Financial dynamics are at play in your business 24/7. A Virtual CFO is “at home” in understanding and applying tactical opportunities to your advantage. Seeing “through to the other side in both reaction and consequence” are the Financial DNA of a Virtual CFO.

5. Uncle Sam. A Virtual CFO can help guide in the prudent application of Best Practices to assist and guide in Tax Mitigation, Tax Compliance and Reporting ensuring “your business can focus on the issues of doing business”. A Virtual CFO can also help in easing the economic and energy required should an issue outside the norms require tax advocacy and representation.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a family of four who spent a lot of time together and with our grandparents and first cousins. I still greatly treasure the many talks with my grandparents especially.

My grandfather on my mother’s side was a Baptist preacher who was one of the most well-spoken and kind people I have ever known. My grandmother Grace on my dad’s side lived from 1896-2001 enjoying time in parts of three different centuries; a feat not many will ever know. I believe that heritage although important is NOT the most important factor in determining your long-term success in life both professionally and personally. I believe that each of us should live life asking ourselves at each step of the way “why not me.” For it is in our striving for excellence we GROW and achieve true success!
