John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Allerpet company begun in Manhattan, NY in 1988 by a couple who had been in the pet products business for many years. After selling their primary pet products business to a New York company, they began the Allerpet company to help people who are allergic to their pets’ live more comfortable, symptom-free lives. In 2014, my partner, Steve Hill, and I purchased the Allerpet company and moved its headquarters from New York to Atlanta. Since that time, we have also moved production and shipping from the Northeast to the South and have expanded our customer base beyond pet products and specialty online retailers to include companies like Wal-Mart Canada, Chewy.com, and a number of export customers from around the world. Bayer, Spain is a private label customer – we manufacture Allerpet under the Vetriderm name for them. Allerpet is also the only product of its kind backed by a published university study.
Allerpet products have helped thousands of pet dander allergic individuals keep the pets that they and their families love rather than having to give the pet up for adoption due to extremely annoying allergic symptoms. Once our customers discover Allerpet products and experience allergic symptom relief, they are usually customers for life.
The Allerpet company also produces DeMite Laundry Additive for people who are dust mite allergic. A small amount of DeMite added to wash water when you launder your sheets, blankets, mattress pads and other bedding items will remove all of the dust mites and their allergens. DeMite is also sold worldwide to help people who are dust mite allergic live more comfortable, symptom-free lives.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success for the Allerpet company has not been smooth, and the challenges have mostly occurred as a result of moving our manufacturing from the company that originally produced our products to other companies that are less familiar with the high standards with which our products must be made. Likewise, our sales process requires more effort and patience than we had expected to encounter. However, we have been able to expand our customer base each year. We now have good distributor partners in eleven foreign countries around the world.
Allerpet – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in allergen avoidance (environmental control) products for people who are allergic to indoor allergens such as animal dander and dust mite allergen. We are known for making products that actually do offer relief from allergy symptoms rather than just making claims of relief. We are most proud of the many positive customer reviews our products have been given through the years, some of which are found on Amazon.com and some can be seen on our websites – allerpet.com and demite.com. What sets us apart from other companies is that our products are both backed by scientific research. Allerpet’s effectiveness was the subject of a university study sponsored by Bayer, A.G., and the DeMite formula was the result of scientific research done in Germany and Australia and published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define our company’s success by giving every retail and wholesale customer our very highest level of customer service as quickly as possible. This level of customer service manifests itself in answering customer questions quickly and thoroughly, sending replacement products if something is damaged and shipping quickly and accurately to our many wholesale customers who re-sell our products in a number of different venues.
