Meet John Haigwood of Haigwood Studios Photography in North Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Haigwood.

John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for photography started right out of high school. As a young photographer, I loved to take pictures of people and landscapes. It wasn’t long before I began mastering the art of portraiture and made photography my profession. I attended The Arts Institute of Atlanta to study photography formally. Then in 1988, my wife, Cindy and I founded our company, Haigwood Studios. We did mostly portraits and weddings from our home studio. Our business started growing, and in 2000, we expanded to our Roswell studio where we are currently located. These days, we focus on commercial/advertising photography, which includes of all types of products, architecture and healthcare as well as fashion and business headshots.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Just like most small business owners, we struggled in the beginning. But the mistakes we made taught us what worked and what didn’t work for us. For example, early on in our business, we offered every kind of photography you can imagine–wedding, babies, even high school seniors! But after several years, we learned that we really wanted to specialize in commercial photography. We pride ourselves on the wisdom we have gained over the years, though we continue to learn–and to make mistakes.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Haigwood Studios Photography – what should we know?
Within commercial photography, we work with a variety of types of clients, which include national product manufacturers as well as local start-up companies. We also work with ad agencies, fashion brands, healthcare and medical companies, the hospitality industry. For each Client, we provide world-class photographic work that they use to promote their businesses and their own clients. I thrive on the challenge that presents itself whenever a client asks us to improve their look/brand with photography. We are very adept at meeting and exceeding our clients’ expectations.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have a great team of people that contribute to our success, from our experienced post-production lead to our talented photographers and trained assistants. I would also credit our personable customer service and individualized attention to each client as a large part of how our business has grown to be (and remains) successful. As far as inspiration goes, I feel that the “digital age” was my mentor. Toward the beginning of my career, digital technology came to the forefront in the photography industry. That technology has given me the extra sense of possibility and flexibility that I use expand and improve my artistry and creativity every day.
