Today we’d like to introduce you to John Hinkel.
John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Roswell Firelabs started because our founders realized there was no community space in Roswell that brings people who love making things together! Through a partnership with the City of Roswell (and the dedicated work of our many volunteers that help to keep everything going), we have been able to build a makerspace that combines all sorts of different disciplines (laser engraving, 3d printing, woodworking, sewing, and stained glass to name a few), provides people with the equipment they might not have at home, and allows everyone to feel empowered to learn how to make anything they want to!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have been able to very effectively grow as an organization thanks to our volunteers and to our partnership with the city! We always need more volunteers, so come by any Monday night at 6PM for a tour of the space and to see How you can join!
We’ve been impressed with Roswell Firelabs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One of the things everyone should know about Roswell Firelabs is that we pride ourselves on being welcoming and beginner-friendly! If you don’t know how to do something and want to learn, we’re more than happy to teach you. We are 100% volunteer-run and all member dues go right back to members in the form of new equipment, space upgrades, repairs to existing equipment, etc. One of the things that sets us apart from others is the large number of different areas we offer to our members! We have leatherworking, sewing, stained glass, woodworking, 3d printing, laser cutting/engraving, metalworking, lathe, and resin pouring equipment, all of which are usable by any member after a brief training session.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Huge thanks to the City of Roswell for their partnership, allowing us the use of the building we currently exist in, and the help they provide us when we have big ideas for the space itself!
