Meet Johnnie Perry Jr of JP Fitness Coaching in Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnnie Perry Jr.

Johnnie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since the age of 18, I’ve been interested in finding ways to build muscle and burn fat. I was the scrawny kid with a high metabolism. No matter what I ate, I couldn’t add a significant amount of muscle. After I figured out the best ways to eat and train for myself, I fell in love with fitness. I never, however, thought to pursue it as a career.

During college, I studied finance. After years of working, I decided to get my MBA. I thought it would help me get a job better than the one I had at that time. I was sitting at a desk for more than eight hours a day in a career field that I wasn’t passionate about.

One day I developed excruciating shoulder pain. After an MRI, an orthopedic surgeon gave me the diagnosis. Rather than going to a physical therapist, I decided to solve the problem on my own. It was at that point that I fell in love with the science and mechanics of the human body. I also became more interested in how nutrition affects us every day. Less than a year later, I decided that this is the path I wanted to follow for the rest of my life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In order to make a big change, you have to make yourself uncomfortable. I left a company I’d been with for ten years to pursue a completely different career path, so the transition wasn’t easy. Going from a steady paycheck to being self-employed can be scary, but it’s been worth it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JP Fitness Coaching story. Tell us more about the business.
The JP Fitness Coaching brand practices neurological and physical typing to individualize training, nutrition, supplementation, and conditioning. We live in a time where everyone wants to be thought of as being different. Everyone wants to be treated as an individual and rightfully so. Through working with different clients over the years, the most important thing I’ve discovered is this: everyone should not train or eat the same way. Everyone has different neurotransmitter dominances, levels of motivation & stress, reactions to insulin and cortisol that would provide a wide range of results if they were on the same program. By taking all of these issues into consideration, it’s much more efficient to design a program that each client can enjoy. I offer one on one training, two on one training, online training, and nutrition coaching. Later this year, I plan to launch an e-book with a full training program and nutrition protocol for individuals seeking to lose fat.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck played a significant role in where I do my in-person training (CYB Atlanta). I met the Lead Body Architect and Studio Owner, Wlaa Weeks, at his brother in law’s wedding in Charleston, SC in 2016. He invited me to the studio and provided some advice, but he wasn’t hiring at the time. Two months later, he asked me to come in for an interview and I’ve been coaching there ever since.
