Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Powell.
Alabama Avenue began in the summer of 2005 in Lafayette, AL with Johnny Powell and his talented high school friends. He named the band after the main street through the courthouse square, blocks from their rehearsal space.
Alabama Avenue’s first gigs were private parties after the local Friday night football games. They became local party favorites and were regulars at The Stampede in Roanoke, AL and The Lazy Peach in downtown LaGrange, GA. They played three years then took a break for members to finish high school, finish college, marry, and join the military.
Alabama Avenue reformed as adults in 2015, debuting at Eighth & Rail’s Open Mic Night in downtown Opelika, AL. That evening led to playing Opelika Main Street’s “On The Tracks – A Food and Wine Event” a few weeks later. They awoke the morning following the event to their photo on the front page of The Opelika-Auburn News. They’ve been booking weekly ever since.
Alabama Avenue dedicated itself to pursuing a full-time music career in December 2016, bringing in Michael Ledbetter on drums. Kevin Welch joined as lead vocalist, Summer of 2017. Christmas 2017 brought Robert Shaddix on bass.
Alabama Avenue is a party band now out of East Alabama, near Auburn.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Our struggle has been finding and retaining talented musicians with full-time availability. We have endured some significant personnel changes, improving our product at each transition.
As we have reached into new markets, the demands for our availability have increased faster and sooner than some members had anticipated.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Alabama Avenue is a party band playing your favorite classic and Southern rock, new and traditional country music, and fun party songs to get your guests singing along and dancing.
