Today we’d like to introduce you to Joi Jamison.
Joi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My dance team was created back in 2009 after teaching two master dance workshops within an after school program. The success of the workshops and the need to implement the arts within the school became a growing need. I met with the principal one day and presented my proposal on why the arts are so essential and the benefits of dance and that was the start of my dance team business journey in Georgia!
The team started off with only five members in 2010 and in a very small, confined space. Currently, On Pointe has reached over 30 students, three teams, one in which is an award-winning competition team. The teams include Team Superstars (ages 5-8 years old) Team Diamonds (ages 9 – 12) and Elite Competition Team (ages 9 – 14).
Through prayer, meditation, dedication, a strong support system and hard work, I have seen my dance team thrive to new levels season after season, that some could only dream about.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own business definitely comes with challenges I will say but for me, it is all to make me stronger and grow personally and as a business woman.
Some of the challenges that I faced in the beginning of this journey was definitely promoting to a new audience, having a consistent supportive dance team family and not trusting everyone who talks up a good game. Once others started to see the work that was being put out from the dance team, they started to come on board and support. I wanted to make sure my dance team spoke for itself and was not to be confused with what they thought a youth dance team was all about. It was imperative that I set a new standard of excellence in the name of dance, which over time has been well worth it.
Please tell us about Pointe Creative Dance Team.
On Pointe Creative Dance Team is one of my greatest accomplishments. On Pointe is a youth-based dance team serving girls between the ages of 5 -14 years old throughout the Metro Atlanta area. The team promotes itself on unity, love, sisterhood, dance education, performance, etiquette and female empowerment. We specialize in various dance styles including modern, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop, African, salsa and ballet.

I am the founder and creative director for On Pointe Creative Dance Team overseeing 26 dancers currently, all the day to day administrative business and choreography for the team. I am blessed to have three amazing assistant coaches that lighten the load for me and assist with classes, event planning, promoting, costume design and even choreography at times. I have over 30 plus years of professional dance training – including jazz, lyrical, modern, African, hip hop and ballet. I have choreographed talent shows, debutante’s, award shows, gala’s, video shoots, commercials, sports halftime shows, showcases and various other events.
I am most proud of being able to be an inspiration and mentor to so many young girls and how they continue to stay connected with me. Being a positive female role model is more important these days than ever before. My first team of dance girls are now sophomores and juniors in college and doing amazing. For many of them – the dance team is what jump started their love and passion for dance and that alone makes me extremely proud as their forever coach and director.
I have always been defined as different and a shining light ever since I was a young girl, growing up in Virginia. The way my mind works and the creative visions that come to me have always set me apart from others. I know I was born to stand out and I took that same truth into my dance team. On Pointe continues to stand out from the rest because we stand on the foundation of quality dance education, sisterhood, creativity, self-expression and female empowerment. We promote a standard of excellence in everything we do and our performances are not your ordinary show put on by young dancers! Our goal when you see our productions is to leave inspired, empowered and engaged. This is why we are always On Pointe!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories would be performing my first dance solo at seven years old in front of a large audience.
