Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Banks.
Jonathan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Atlanta 13 years ago. My goal? Spit hot fire and eat off of my music—a cliché fueling many rap-til-I-die hip-hoppers. Problem was I had no business plan, and one-day fatherhood woke me up from my dream. Sure, I could’ve kept grinding. Many suggested it, but I couldn’t justify a profitless hustle—especially with a baby on the way. While thinking of ways to turn creativity into cash, I eventually purchased a camera kit and started shooting photos by the thousands. I discovered mentors like Gordon Parks and Joe McNally. Eventually getting client work, justifying my purchase, and redefining my purpose. Now, I work in advertising as a Copywriter/Content Creator. Honing my skills full-time. Choosing who and when I shoot. Creating art. Entering art shows.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Conflict is essential to growth. Obstacles are inevitable blessings in disguise. I’ve lost money, time, and relationships pursing my dreams. But I’m gaining everything back—slowly. It’s like I’m being rebuilt. Made stronger and wiser from experience. Journey Brave is a mindset. Tranquility in disturbance is now my mantra. Embracing the beautiful struggle. Learning. Growing. Living.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m always in the creative pursuit of authenticity. I tell stories with my camera. I sell experiences, not photoshoots. Perspective, not pictures. Yeah, this is something every respectable photographer does, but they can’t see the world through my eyes. And I can’t see the world through theirs. This is what makes us all unique.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently working on another creative business venture. I don’t want to share too many details but expect to see something new and accessible in the fall.
