Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonny Fields.
Hi Jonny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started music when I was about six or seven years old. My earliest memory is singing in my church’s children’s choir, where I performed my first solo. My parents kept a cassette tape of it and played it throughout various points of my childhood. I didn’t realize at the time how much music would eventually shape my life. As I grew up, I continued singing in church, and with the support of my family and friends I had the chance to explore a variety of different genres and instruments such as the banjo, harmonica, piano, and many more. Each instrument shaped the way I understood music and how I love to share it. My wife jokes that I’m a bard at heart; always telling stories through whatever string or key I can get my hands on. Little by little, I fell completely in love with the sounds. It has brought so many blessings into my life and connected me with people I never would have met otherwise.
My journey as a songwriter began with my longtime friend Jake Woodall, another local talented musician. He was the first person I ever shared my inspiration and passion for music with, and working with him, learning, writing, and performing, gave me confidence and opened up a creative space I had never experienced before. I eventually took some time away from creating, and during that break I was lucky to have a partner who reminded me how deeply music lived within me. After a long hiatus, I’ve returned to writing and recording with more passion than ever.
For me, there’s no greater feeling than sharing music with others. It creates a connection that can’t be replicated. Every song becomes its own conversation, its own bridge between souls. More than anything, I want to keep pursuing opportunities to play, create, and share what lives within me with anyone who’s willing to listen.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t been smooth. The biggest obstacle I’ve ever faced has been my own mentality. For a long time, I questioned whether my music was good enough to share, whether anyone would care about what I had to say, or if I could ever measure up to the musicians I admired. That kind of self-doubt held me back more than any external challenge ever could, and I wish I hadn’t let those fears stop me from pursuing something I genuinely love.
Through a lot of reflection, and the steady encouragement of the people around me, something eventually clicked: some gifts are meant to be shared. Music is one of them. I realized that the key to pursuing this path is to create with confidence, appreciation, and love for what I write. Comparison will always be the thief of joy, and doubt never really takes a day off, but when you pour yourself fully into what you love, you find joy regardless of the outcome. Music is a language we all understand. I remind myself every day that what I have to say will resonate with someone out there, and that alone keeps me grounded and confident in how I create.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
By day, I work in logistics for a mechanical engineering and HVAC company in Atlanta, where I’m grateful to be surrounded by a team that challenges me and supports my growth across a variety of fields. I also have the privilege of helping my wife with her family pet-care business, which not only allows us to build something of our own, but gives us the joy of meeting so many incredible animals and the families who love them. Outside of that, I also moonlight with my wife as Chinese lion dancer with Phoenix Wellness Arts around the greater Atlanta area, so if you’re out during Lunar New Year, definitely come see us perform!
I’ve had the chance to play at weddings, perform at Newnan Porchfest and the East Atlanta Village Strut, support local community events like those hosted by the Fuller Center, and submit a youtube video of my original song “No Fear” to the 2025 NPR Tiny Desk Concert contest. I’ve also recently joined the worship team at Southside Church in Newnan, which has helped me grow both musically and personally while connecting me with an incredible community. I’m excited to continue building as a professional musician in 2026.
I think what makes my music unique is the way I treat it like a language of the soul. Every instrument I’ve learned, every community I’ve belonged to, and every person who has poured into me becomes part of the story I share. I try to bring warmth, vulnerability, and intention to every performance, inviting people not just to hear a song, but to feel at home in it. People often tell me that even if the words don’t immediately resonate, they feel the power and emotion in my voice. That connection, where someone feels something before they can even name it, that is what drives me. It’s the heart of how I create and the reason I keep sharing my music.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck is something we often talk about as if it’s the driving force behind success. In my life, I don’t feel “lucky” because things simply worked out, I feel lucky in the sense of being blessed by the people who’ve shaped me. Throughout my journey, I’ve had people who challenged me, encouraged me, dismissed me, supported me, and pushed me to grow. Every one of them has played a role in who I’ve become as a musician and as a writer. The words I share and the music I create come from experiences I would never trade. They were not random; they were moments that formed me. Whether you call it luck, blessing, or destiny, I believe we’re all given opportunities for growth. When we choose to embrace those moments; both the hard ones and the beautiful ones, we end up becoming far more than we expected.
