Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Bingham.
Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2013, I started working for a furniture company owned by a friend and mentor of mine. At first, I had no idea what I was doing, but over the years, the company I was working for refined my skills to build and finish high-quality furniture. The problem was, it was someone else’s dream. And I was beginning to build my own dream of creating some super cool, original designs. I’d stay after hours to play with the ideas in my head. I couldn’t ignore the stirring desire to do more. I talked to my wife about starting Reclamation Wood Co.—though we didn’t know that would be its name at the time. We had a one-bedroom apartment with no workspace or yard. But in late 2016, I started collecting my own tools and borrowing garage space—with no electricity—from a friend. We ran extension cords from the inside of my friend’s home out to his garage. There were times I would interrupt their family dinner to flip the breaker back on so I could keep working. Their kindness is part of the reason Reclamation Wood Co. is now where it is today.
After a couple of months of steady work, I quit my full-time job to officially launch the company. Close to a year later, I moved out of my friend’s garage and into a 1,600 square foot barn with all the electricity I could ever need! I am currently three years in, and the business is finally at a point where we can see growth. It’s still not easy. There are many late nights and early mornings. But it’s still worth it. I wouldn’t be here without the support of my wife, my friends, and my family.
I named my company, Reclamation Wood Co. because I believe I have been reclaimed. What I mean by that is, we are all born into a world of sin where sin tries to claim us. But through Jesus’ sacrifice, we have been reclaimed. And that correlates to reclaiming wood to turn it into something better, giving something a purpose.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Woodworking is hard. I was a newlywed when I started the business. So, balancing work and life while providing for my family was certainly tough. Also, I was starting from scratch. I didn’t have a truck to deliver the furniture I was making at the time. At first, I was working in the open air, so the nights were cold and the days were sweltering hot.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Reclamation Wood Co. – what should we know?
Reclamation Wood Co. is a furniture and design company. We specialize in making custom furniture that will last forever. We are known for our quality, our designs, our values, and our relationships with our clients. As a newer business, I am most proud that at year three, we are self-sustaining. It’s cool to see the hard work and sacrifice pay off! We give 10% to missions. Our goal is to take a ‘want’ and fulfill a ‘need.’
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife, Josie, has been my biggest supporter and source of encouragement. I wouldn’t have had the balls to do it without her. Daniel and Becca Harper let me use their garage in the very beginning. They are both incredible business mentors and push me to be better. My family has encouraged me tremendously. My in-laws have bought me tools.
