Meet Jordan Young of Salem Design Studio in Lithonia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Young.

Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I never really had any style or thought about making clothes until high school. The summer before ninth grade, I told my brother, Norman, that I was going to be the freshest nigga at MLK. I tried but keeping up with all the name brand clothes was too expensive. So, I started following Kanye’s style. I took my grandma’s sewing machine and tapered my jeans and ripped them. I bought my t-shirts big to make them fit oversized. that was my start. After that, I just started sewing more and designing clothes. If it wasn’t for my grandmother’s sewing machine, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all, but my struggles made me who I am today. not being able to find a reasonable production company/manufacturer has encouraged me to learn patternmaking (still learning) and making clothes from scratch. I sometimes get a creative block for a long time and my biggest problem is finding the motivation to work diligently and consistently. Recently I learned that you won’t always feel like working, but you have to be tough and grind through even when you are not motivated.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Salem Design Studio – what should we know?
Salem Design Studio is a unisex clothing brand. I feel like I’m known for being someone that respects and appreciates real fashion designing. I feel like I don’t specialize in anything since I am still learning about fashion designing. I’m proud of doing everything on my own and from my heart. What sets me apart from others is that I can sew, neatly. (8/10 sew game)
