Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordy Pope and Robin Kreisher.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jordy and Robin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Jordy- I always thought that I would be a music journalist or a designer is growing up. I was super into music and styling, but I stumbled into hair because I was living in Texas and wanted to be more experimental with my hair and couldn’t find anyone to work with my hair the way I wanted them to. So that led me to YouTube University and kitchen scissors! Eventually my friends started asking me to do things with their hair and after a year of college and skipping those classes to do hair in my dorm I decided to finally go to cosmetology school. Fast forward a move from Austin to Atlanta, assisting for some of Atlanta’s greats I ended up meeting Robin and we ended up having this amazing relationship and MOOD is the result of that! I’ve never felt so supported and loved in a work environment before.
Robin- Truth be told, doing hair was never on my radar. My sweet mother signed me up for cosmetology school, and I was not into the idea at all. She told me i could move out on my own if i tried it, and that’s all it took. BYE! Fifteen years in the business and I can honestly say this is what i was meant to do. THANKS MOM! I started at a well known salon for a few years as a color specialist, Once my family grew ( I have two sweet kids) i started my wedding business- doing bridal hair and makeup. Brides will probably always be my favorite part of hairdressing. After both of my kids started school, I started working behind the chair again and then met Jordy! We quickly realized we had so many like-minded ideas of what this job is and could be, and started MOOD! I’ve never worked in a more positive environment in my life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Jordy- Being in such a creative field has a lot of perks, but also can be pretty emotionally draining if you don’t take care of yourself. Getting started, I had an interesting time trying to find a place where I fit in, instead of making my own space. My road hasn’t been the smoothest, but it wasn’t the worst thing ever. In hindsight, I realized the struggles I had, finding my voice with different personalities, struggling with trying to please everyone, and just taking care of the brain has definitely been a learning curve, and I’m finally getting the hang of it.
Robin- Juggling a family as well as a business is sometimes challenging. For the most part, it has been pretty smooth though. Hairdressing is one of those jobs that is crazy emotionally draining sometimes. Sometimes you have to regroup. I think recognizing that, and not getting discouraged is a really important part of the journey. You’re not going to please everyone, but you want to. That’s hard and humbling. Ultimately, going through tough situations spits you out a better person/stylist, in my opinion.
Please tell us about your business.
The mood is a salon for the people who are loud and vibrant! The people who want to have a safe space to come and everyone feels like longtime friends. We specialize in cuts and color, but making it your own and not just another Instagram post. You always leave us feeling a little bit lighter and having better hair. We love lived in color and funky vivids, and we can get you right with a blunt bob. Our most proud accomplishment and what sets us apart is that nobody is a stranger. We’re all friends and only have love to give.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Jordy- The only thing that I would have done differently is to start taking myself more serious earlier. I feel like everything aligned the way that it was supposed to get me to this space, so I can’t say there is anything that I would go back and change other than my mindset.
Robin- If I could start over, I would probably do more on social media in the beginning. It’s annoying sometimes, and I’m not nearly as good as I would like to be, but it’s so important. I would go back and fine-tune those skills for sure.
