Meet Jorge Santiago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Santiago.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in El Paso, Texas and drawing became my obsession in high school after discovering Ranma 1/2. I moved out to Georgia, leaving my family behind, to pursue my dream of making the best comics I could achieve. I earned my MFA and have never been closer to making that dream a reality.

Please tell us about your art.
I make comics and tell stories about people. My goal is to grab my readers like a beautiful song and affect them on an emotional level, whether that be with laughs or tears. I hope that people find that empathy is what makes us strong; compassion is a strength and we are never stronger than when we try to understand and love one another. My artwork won’t ever be the best or most polished, but I will try to make comics that make you feel something.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
My definition of success is about being true to myself. My goal as an artist is to create works that are true to myself and my sensibilities. I hope people enjoy my stories, but my mantra to creating art is to make art that I can be proud of, and that will be work that my readers will resonate with the most. I want artists to make work that rises to their expectations, and that challenge is how we grow as people. If I make art that doesn’t challenge myself or my readers, then what am I making it for?

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have my website jorgesantiagojr.com and I post as often as I can on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram to the account @jorgesantiagojr. I regularly tend conventions in the southeast United States, but I may pop up other places if I can afford a ticket. My site has a store where you can purchase my books, and I have a Patreon in the works! You can also read my webcomic “The Curse of the Eel” on Tapastic, Smackjeeves, and Tumblr.
