Meet Jorge Vargas Camacho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Vargas Camacho.

Jorge, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to the US at the age of three. All through elementary to the little bit of time I spent in high school, I was drawing and painting. However, I had no formal art training until my first art classes of my life in college two years ago. Since then, I have slowly been trying to figure out my voice and style. Currently, I am focused on oil paintings and now that it is summer, specifically, Plein air painting.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My mother has always supported me as an artist. She has always given me the motivation and as a child, she provided me with whatever art supplies she could afford to get me. Art is not cheap to make or study and for those reasons, I never got the art training I needed until college. Regardless, I am grateful for everything my mom has done for me and every single art supply I own.

What were you like growing up?
I have been drawing since I can remember. I used to have a magnetic drawing board as a child and that was all I would spend my time using all day. I enjoyed school and performed well but sketching on the margins is all I remember from grade school. All my life, I have been a quiet and reserved person. For the past year, I have been finding a newfound confidence within myself. This has been a result of working on my art and realizing how the whole I can feel by simply placing paint down on a canvas.
