Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Thrash.
Joseph, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had music in my life, but it wasn’t until my time at UGA that I felt fully ready to manifest my artistic point of view. At 20, I stepped into the music production scene as Nifty Earth. With the large community of musicians within Athens, GA, I was able to recruit multiple instrumentalists to perform the music I was writing live. Joey Tuholski (Drummer, aka Pure Colors), Jose Moran (Saxophonist at Misnomer), Megan Li (Violinist), and other great artists played a huge part in the initial development of Nifty Earth. Using recordings and samples of various unique instruments, I was able to craft a sound that I felt was fresh enough to share. Since then I have put out an EP (Equal Plane – 2014) and a full album (From Here – 2016), and I’m currently in the process of a new record set for a hopeful release before the second half of 2019. My released songs are available on all available streaming and download platforms.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think anybody in the music industry has a smooth road. The biggest struggle is the payout on streaming to musicians. Royalty statements for even a large amount of streams are minuscule compared to a downloaded purchase. Overcoming that financial hurdle is something I think every musician today encounters.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nifty Earth – what should we know?
Through a blend of real-world instruments that shine a bright light on the vast ethnic backgrounds and incredible sounds that exist throughout our planet – I hopefully crafted a sonic environment that reflects the strong bond and unity that music provides us all to enjoy. Nifty Earth is stylistically designed to move the listener through a series of powerful emotions and vibrantly danceable sounds that speak right to the collective heart we all share.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I had already mentioned some people that have had an impact on my progress earlier. Others include Haley Hamblen (featured on “The Breath” and “Drifting Awake”), Bryan Rucker (featured on “Let Go”), and Erin Burchfield or Pip the Pansy (formerly known as Wrenn, featured on “Seen This Before”). I am very proud to have worked with these vocalists. Also, my family and friends have always been supportive and encouraging.
