Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Leonard.
Hi Joshua, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Miami, FL to a military family where I moved to Alaska from Hurricane Andrew, and then to Maryland after that. I also lived in Biloxi, MS, but due to Hurricane Katrina, I was displaced to Atlanta, GA. I’m the youngest of 3 boys, and we all played sports growing up, but I played sports and was an artist. My brother taught me how to draw when I was in Kindergarten, and I never stopped.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road, and there were many struggles along the way. I started off as a Graphic Design major because that major still allowed me to create, etc…, but Hurricane Katrina forced me to move to Atlanta, and my daughter was born in the same week. That whole experience made me appreciate the little things because everything can be taken from us in the blink of an eye. When I moved to Atlanta, there was more opportunity to draw and create for a living because of all of the art schools, and Cartoon Network, etc… It was a win/win situation for me, and I’m grateful for it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Leonard Studios is a pre-production studio that specializes in character design, visual development, and storytelling. It is known for its creation of Team Supreme; A story about kids who all have a disability, and also have superpowers. We focus on creating diverse and inclusive characters and storytelling that change the narrative of what is deemed as “Different.” I am most proud of Team Supreme because I believe it has opened so many more doors for me as it pertains to the animation industry, etc… I have met and connected with some amazing people, and I’m very grateful for that.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Qualities or characteristics that I feel is the most important to my success is being a man of integrity, staying humble, the ability to network, and the ability to want to learn and grow as an artist. I also believe in positive branding, which is just using my platforms to sell myself, and my artwork.
