Today we’d like to introduce you to JP Stewart.
Hi JP, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started photography when my mom gave me her camera. It was a canon rebel T5. I was just messing around with the camera because I liked taking pictures of myself. Also my dad was a photographer so I believe that’s where the sparking interest came from. He used to take me and my siblings on shoots with him. This was like early 2000s during the transition of film to digital, my dad was still using a film camera. Fast forwarding, he taught me a little bit about taking pictures and how to work the camera as he seen that I had interest in it. I didn’t really know what type of photography I wanted to do but I knew I like taking pictures of people. One day I had asked Carmen, one of the models I shoot today, to be my muse for a test shoot! I learned that I really loved shooting her and that’s how I started to get into fashion and beauty. I started watching YouTube videos on how to edit and I picked up a good retouching skill. YouTube also helped me with the fashion and beauty side of photography. Now I am going into my second year of photography and I have high hopes for this year, 2022.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For my first year, it’s been definitely a challenge in understanding how everything worked on this summer photography. From test shoots to collaborations to paid shoots! I mainly struggle with understanding collaborations and how they worked. Another thing that has been a struggle is me not having my own studio space. I had to hop around Atlanta’s different studios to find one that fits me best. One other thing was trying to find people to shoot because in the beginning of my career, I was living and traveling from a rule area to the city which was about an hour and thirty away. I couldn’t practice or make content like I wanted to but I still may do with what I had around me. At this time, I was in college playing basketball for Middle Georgia State University. I found a couple of people to shoot with. But the main struggle was the distance for me this past year. Now I move closer to Atlanta so I have overcame that!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Hey, I’m JP and I’m a photographer based out of Atlanta, Georgia. I mainly shoot fashion, beauty, and portrait photography. I am known for my beauty work, my retouching and also my lightning. I can say I’m the most proud of my beauty work and how I retouch images. My eye for photography and knowing the type of angles and shots that I want set me apart from other photographers. Also, my knowledge and maturity for my age set me apart!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that’s surprising is definitely my age.
