Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovan Johnson.
Jovan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Lithonia, Georgia. At an early age, I discovered my gift and passion for math. It wasn’t until high school when I took a business course, that business became on my radar as a possible career. I received both my Undergraduate Degree in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of West Georgia. While completing my Master’s degree, I passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. My first job was as a Tax Accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Atlanta. I felt this was the best way to start my career, as I was challenged and around some of the most brilliant individuals. However, there was something inside of me that wanted more. I really wanted to help individuals transform their lives by making effective financial decisions. It was at this point that I decided to depart from PwC and work at a Financial Planning firm.
At this firm, I assisted Lead Financial Advisors with preparing and executing tailored financial plans for high-net-worth individuals. It was a great experience to learn the financial planning process and communication methods. However, something didn’t feel right. I was offering strategic solutions to help many wealthy clients while my family and peers struggled to make simple financial decisions. This didn’t sit well with me. I figured I have the education, tools, experience, and passion for helping transform the lives of individuals in my own community. Also, as the only black financial planner at my firm (they never had a black financial advisor before), there was a lack of support and investment from leadership. Peers that started at the firm months/years after me experienced things that I was never able to. This is why I founded Piece of Wealth Planning in 2018. Many financial professionals have a minimum asset or income requirement, which makes them inaccessible to most individuals. My services are accessible to everyday individuals and I offer strategic solutions through ongoing financial planning, investment management, and tax preparation services to help you build sustainable generational wealth.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. There have been times when I even wanted to give up and go back to corporate life for “stability” and “predictability”. However, I know that all of this is worth it! Entrepreneurship is not meant to be easy, as building a business from scratch is very challenging. Not only am I the financial advisor, but I am also the salesman, marketing expert, compliance team, bookkeeper, etc.
As a minority in the financial services industry, there are many barriers to overcome. Many times, there is a preconceived notion that white advisors are more knowledgeable than minority advisors. This creates a large hurdle, as we often have to acquire more designations and do more just to compete with our white counterparts. Also, sometimes it can be challenging to target minority communities as potential clients. For some, there is a large learning gap and they are not as involved in their finances as much as they should be. But this is understandable, as for many minorities, this will be their first time ever working with a financial advisor.
However, we can only grow through failures. I am fueled by challenges, as they provide me with an opportunity to be strategic and creative. I am much further along than I was when I started.
