Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovon Roberts.
Jovon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story starts in 2016, shortly after completing my tour in the US Air Force. I was looking for a way to use my time creatively, and take my mind away from every day stressors. I started by taking photos of landscapes with my iPhone. Shortly after, I invested in a beginner’s digital camera. With it, I would take photos of water bottles and other various objects in my house to learn camera settings, because I was afraid of taking a bad photo of a real person, and them not liking it.
I soon became comfortable taking photos of my friends and family, which made me more confident in my craft. I completely fell in love with Photography. I lived, ate, and breathed it. I knew I had found my passion.
Within about five months of photographing people, a long-time friend of mine introduced me to Emmy award winner Jharrel Jerome. We became friends instantly. He allowed me to use his platform, so that I could see what the world thought of my work. Until then I had only had family and friends. I didn’t feel as though that was enough to tell if I was on the right track. I’m mean, they love me, so they have to be nice… right?
Now, I had my work displayed on the MTV Movie Awards, where millions saw it. All from taking photos of friends. “This is it! My big break! I’m outta here!”, I thought. I was wrong. There was still work to be done. Lots.
I quickly developed relationships with clientele that had appeared after hearing about me or seeing my work over time. I learned that it’s the everyday people and businesses that really keep you going in this field. Since then I have taken plenty of amazing opportunities and met great people. It wasn’t the plan, but a higher power.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Balancing a 9 to 5 job, school, and a production start-up was definitely something difficult to tackle that first. I would find myself editing photos and videos on every lunch break in between work and school, and any other moments of free time for that matter. Finding a way to build a steady income on my own, was the biggest stepping stone for my success. I couldn’t focus on working for myself while I’m working for someone else.
