Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Johnson.
Joy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I opened my private therapy practice in January 2017, after 7 years of working in the field. I saw a need to offer creative services to maximize the benefits of therapy, such as “walk & talk” therapy and online sessions. My clients are often high achievers working so hard to take care of everything and everyone else, but often forget to take care of themselves, becoming overwhelmed and burnt out. I’ve been there, so I know how difficult it can be to find a balance. I am compassionate about providing a safe space for healing, while also implementing practical techniques that you can use in your daily life. Using self-compassion and mindfulness strategies, I can help people gain more inner peace and fulfillment in their lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
As a therapist, I’m always trying to learn and grow so I can provide the best services possible to my clients. Stepping out on my own in business has been a whole new challenge – the mindful self-compassion strategies I use in session have been so helpful in navigating this process. It’s helped me to truly understand what it’s like to be a small business owner, entrepreneur, and having to take risks and just put yourself out there!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
These days there is so much to juggle and keep track of – it’s easy to be really hard on yourself to take care of everything but yourself. I work with entrepreneurs, parents, creatives (or all of the above!) to create a mindful self-compassion practice that allows them to continue to do amazing things in the world while also taking care of themselves to avoid burn out.
One of my most popular services is walk and talk therapy! Instead of spending another hour sitting in an office, we walk around the Grant Park neighborhood for the therapy session. Research shows that movement is not only beneficial for your physical health, but also for your brain and mental health. Different parts of the brain are accessed while walking, so it can help people who have felt stuck with traditional therapy find new ways to think about their lives. Rather than sitting around talking about change, we can move forward, literally!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta has been a great place to build my business. I have found a group of entrepreneurs and therapists who are supportive and open to learning from one another, rather than being overly competitive.
