Today we’d like to introduce you to Joya King.
Hi Joya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Most people don’t know this but I started JoyAromas in undergrad. As part of a class project. It was my senior year at Kennesaw State University and I used all of my electives to take entrepreneurship courses. At first, I had no idea I wanted to start a candle company. After looking through the course requirements, I discovered that these courses would prepare me to create a real business if I took them seriously and not just completed the assignments for a grade.
I spent a lot of money on candles but was unimpressed by the quality of store-bought candles. Having this reflection, I told myself I wanted to create a candle business that produced all-natural high-quality products with long-lasting aromas. That was when I started creating the business plan for JoyAromas Candle Company, LLC.
After graduation, it was time to turn my dream into a reality. JoyAromas Candle Company, LLC officially launched on August 28th, 2021. I started with only eight candle aromas. As of present, April 2022, I have expanded my product collection to include candles, wax melts, aroma mists, car diffusers, and essential oils.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Most people assume you just melt down some wax, add fragrance, and you have a candle. That is not the reality of it at all. My biggest struggle was finding the perfect compatibility between all of my raw materials such as the right wax, fragrance complements, the correct wick, etc. I spent about seven months undergoing different trials and errors to perfect my handcrafted aromas and there’s more to learn – you can never stop improving your crafts and your brand.

JoyAromas Candle Company create all-natural aromatic products that are precisely handcrafted from the base ingredients to the aromas that fragrant your home. The use of wooden wicks in our candles provides a soothing light crackle noise to entice the aromatic experience.
Being that our aroma mists are all-natural, they can be used for your body, car, linen, or room. That is why I refer to them as aroma mists versus room sprays because their usage extends far beyond spraying a room.
The candles are all-natural and can be used as a massage candles as well.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to always have a willingness to learn, even things outside of your niche. As a small business owner, I had to learn to do so much more than just make candles to have a successful business. I had to learn about marketing, digital design, content creation, finances, understanding different business markets, fulfillment logistics, state policies, etc. Your business is what you put into it and you have to have that eagerness to learn to ensure your business will always be the best it can be.
