Joyce, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So I majored in Applied Mathematics and have been in the financial industry almost all my professional life, getting close to 30 years now. Why did you choose math as your major? I get that question every now and then. My answer is not because I love math but because this was the subject that I could spend the longest time without getting bored. I tried different things after graduating from college, but almost naturally finance was a path that was leading me to, no matter where I went–contract reviews, accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, forecasting, project management, capital investment, group benefits, taxes.
After working for a federal government for over ten years in Washington, DC, I moved down to Georgia and opened up a 100% online wholesale company in 2005 with three other partners. I was just so busy working in the business with my partners day in and day out. There, we had all different specialists visiting our warehouse, offering different services and products. I asked them to come back to me with what they can do or offer, taking a holistic approach because I needed to know the bottom line effect that action(s) will have on our company’s financials as wells as employees’ well being. Surprisingly, nobody came back with what I expected.
That was an unexpected aha moment for me, realizing that there isn’t enough of meaningful holistic support available to small business owners. They need what big companies need in terms of support, yet they can’t afford to hire the full support. I changed my course of action, left the partnership, took a huge leap of faith, following what my heart was directing me. So my journey as a financial strategist and planner started in year 2014. I wanted to be the person who small business owners can trust in figuring out how to manage cash, how to build and create programs to reduce their tax liability, how to plan, budget, and prepare for their personal future as well as their company’s ongoing concern. Managing and creating cash flow is so critical to everyone. And tax planning is huge in making that happen. It applies to individuals and businesses.
It’s been the most rewarding and exciting journey for me. Witnessing business owners and individuals grow their wealth in a sustainable way is priceless. My boutique firm is located in Duluth, GA. We welcome virtual clients as well as local clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it wasn’t a smooth road. Marketing was a big challenge for me. I knew what I was capable of doing and the value that I could truly create for my clients. But how do I put myself in front of those who are in need was my biggest challenge. I literally cold walked and talked to business owners.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Best Accounting & Tax Solutions story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m the owner of Best Accounting & Tax Solutions where we offer financial planning and business consultation, focusing on tax planning. We’re proactive, so we work with our clients throughout the year: better cash management including investment activities, taking advantage of tax deduction potentials, big purchases, etc. We don’t wait till the time you file your tax return. It’s because if you do, we know you can only do so much. The year had already ended.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It will definitely be more virtual, probably no need to have big physical offices. The consulting need/demand will be there even more so than now because of the constant changes in tax and everything else.
