Today we’d like to introduce you to Juanita Ramos.
Juanita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
During the pandemic, I wanted to make learning fun again. I enjoy the creative process behind writing and want my children to feel the same excitement about the arts. My son loves to draw, my daughter enjoys photography. I’m the writer. I am always looking for ways to engage my children in creative projects. My daughter wants to start her own YouTube channel reading books to other young children.
Of course, my mind started spinning and I figured instead of reading other people’s books, she could read her own. Our first children’s book, The ATL Alphabet, is a book I worked on with my seven-year-old to teach Atlanta children about their roots. Whether it’s historical figures or landmarks, Atlanta is rich in history and pride. The book features recognizable figures and places, along with teaching Atlanta’s history. It’s a fun way to learn about Atlanta at any age and the book was definitely a lot of fun to write.
Has it been a smooth road?
Have you ever tried keeping a seven-year-old focused? There are 26 letters in the alphabet. It was a challenge to figure out a theme for each letter that was fun and engaging but we were up for the challenge and it was fun.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
We published the ATL Alphabet Book under our publishing Company 1881 Blue Books Publishing. The name of the publishing company pays homage to my alma mater, Spelman College, which was founded in 1881. This publishing company is a unique way for me to teach my children business principles while publishing books that are meaningful to them. I want to teach my children early the value of entrepreneurship. We have creativity meetings and I am excited with the topics my children have chosen to discuss. My son is 12, my daughter is seven. Both have chosen topics that will really connect with their readers. I am most proud of the fact that I have found a way to connect with my children and inspire them to write and continue to be creative. Both my children are immensely talented and I really want to nurture their ambitions.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe that Atlanta is a great place to start a business, and with what I’m doing for the culture during these critical times- I have received nothing more but amazing support from parents in Atlanta. I would love to partner with local schools around the world who want to integrate my book series into their learning structure.
