Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Brown
Hi Julian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey of innovating plastic to fuel reactors truly started in my childhood. As a young kid ( ages 3-13) I loved building my own inventive ideas with Lego blocks. I would build things I thought up in my mind and make them a reality. Additionally in the 4th grade, I was enrolled in Karate class, where I later received my black belt in the 8th grade. Both of these hobbies laid the foundation for what I went on to do in my adult life. Building with my hands taught me to never limit my creativity, while the discipline of a martial art taught me perseverance and to never give up. In my 10th grade year I began to garden and study sustainable agriculture. This opened my perspective to the innate resourcefulness of nature, and the importance of self sufficiency. These combined forces applied to my life in the 11th grade, when I enrolled into a high school welding course. The next year, 12th grade, I began to build my first plastic into fuel reactor. There were many trials and tribulations that come with building an innovative technology, but the character sharpening I had undergone made quitting not even a possibility. Fast forward almost 4 years after my high school graduation, I have constructed my 5th plastic into fuel prototype and have shared my journey across the entire earth!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road leading me to where I am and where I continue to go has absolutely been anything but smooth. I have struggled with issues with my machines themselves; explosions, injuries, delays ect. I have also dealt with the first 3 years doing this completely out of my own pocket. As a result, on many occasions I found myself being extremely financially bottlenecked. At times I had to choose between buying a component that would make my operation safer, or buying something I needed in my personal life. Many of my struggles would become intertwined. For example, not being able to afford a safer component would lead to accidents happening in my machinery, leading to injuries. My worst incident occurred the end of May, 2024. I was refining my plastic made “crude oil” when I had mistakenly skipped an important safety step within the refining apparatus. Hot and flammable fuel vapors jetted out directly at my feet, giving me 2nd degree burns. I had to get burn surgery for these injuries and was out of operation for almost 6 months from my mission.
As you know, we’re big fans of Naturejab. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Naturejab is a company I founded that is specializing in the innovation of microwave pyrolysis. Microwave pyrolysis is a modern and efficient way to turn waste plastics into usable fuel products. Naturejab is known for sharing the message of it’s research with the world. This includes all of the good and bad moments as well as many different collaborations. Naturejab will publicly test different plastic-made fuels in different types of vehicles for tens of thousands to watch live, and for millions to watch afterward in video form. This openness to the public is what makes Naturejab different from most other pyrolysis companies. Though there are many solutions in the works to the plastic problem, Naturejab believes the people deserve to know the whole story and to watch the progress to the solution, not just the end result. I am most proud of Naturejab for the growth is has garnered. Within just a 3 year timespan of publicly posting videos, Nature jab has collectively over 2Million followers! The most important thing anyone can do for Naturejab’s mission is to share what is being done.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Within the next 5-10 years I see plastic into fuel as a leading solution to plastic waste. Even beyond the many different opinions of fuel use, the plastic problem is growing too quickly and there are not enough viable ways to universally process all plastic and create high value products on the back end. It may take the plastic problem becoming even worst before governments incentivize such technology, but nonetheless the time will come very soon. Politically, people are noticing that even in 1st world countries, plastics and microplastics are having a direct affect on their lives, let alone those in underdeveloped nations. These growing environmental, humanitarian and health concerns will further propagate the necessity to implement a global solution.
