Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Dominy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a traveled southern belle by way of living in 7 different east coast states growing up passing through 28 schools with my mother working for the government and my father on airplanes. I got to meet lots of different people and experience a multitude of cultures which helped me to become unique in my style and love change. I was blessed in a time of need. My son developed a severe allergic reaction to milk and eggs during the planning process of my own wedding and I had to quit my job to stay home with him.
I was super blessed to have met and hired my florist Nelson Lynn Teate of Flowers By Lynn and offered to help him with weddings if he ever needed. You can imagine my excitement when he called and asked me to come help with a local wedding. He trained me in trial by fire by putting me in front of a bucket of mixed flowers and telling me to make the wedding party bouquets and the rest was history as my passion for flower design was lit. I was so inspired that I began to try and learn as many types of flowers and design styles as I could and still try to develop my craft through classes like the upcoming Intrigue teaches design seminar in Atlanta in March 2018.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Challenges in the flower design business for me come mostly with mother nature. With the use of Pinterest brides can gravitate heavily to a certain color or look with can create a shortage of flower availability. Like right now everyone is gaga over burgundy and the farms have not grown enough flowers to fill the demand. Thanks to some amazing Atlanta wholesalers and international ace’s to flowers by way of the Atlanta airport you can design a beautiful day for any clients need with some creative flower selection.
Southern Florals and Drapes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an event designer specializing in weddings. We also offer Draping, uplighting and some special effects like monograms and geysers. I think what makes me different is the fact I love change and doing things differently in my own way. We go above and beyond a bride’s visual expectations and work hard day off with all vendors to do whatever it takes to make each brides day the best day ever. I am most proud of the wonderful team I have with my husband Ken Dominy and design Kristi Hightower and the amazing events we have created. Flowers have taken me places I could never have imagined like the I Tonya movie we got to recreate Olympic scenes for and special events the Georgia Governor has attended.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We are in the heart of central Georgia by being in Macon. This is a great location being on the outskirt of Atlanta and have reached to all kinds of things like Accent Décor, the Mart and Georgia Expo plus we get a wide range of clientele from the classic southern wedding to the modern events of the big city. There is lots of business so I think it is a perfect place for new and up in coming designers.
