Meet Julie Marateck of Marateck Creative & Comedy in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Marateck.

Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got my start in documentary film and photography back in the early ’00s, and as my journey continued, I worked in the marketing departments at the High Museum of Art, Atlantic Station, and several award-winning advertising agencies in Atlanta. I realized that what I loved most about marketing was the storytelling aspect. Every brand and business has a story tell. This is what connects consumers to your brand. I started Marateck Creative as an extension of this philosophy. In addition, I am also a stand-up comedian and have performed in Atlanta and around the Southeast. Stand up has given me a voice and a perception of the world that no other “marketing” platform ever gave me. So, in addition to my freelance marketing company, I also teach and give talks on how stand up can influence marketing strategies and branding.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh man, is it ever a smooth road? If you are playing it safe, it will be smooth. But who wants safe! The road has been a wayward journey of career moves, job transitions, and digging deep into who I am and what I want. I feel grateful for the journey because it has taken me to this new place of combining so many of my passions. The heart and soul of stand up isn’t getting a laugh. It’s failing, and then getting back up again and again and again. This is the same with careers. If you bomb, you either get back up or you don’t. Always get back up.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Marateck Creative & Comedy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My base has always been in copywriting and social strategy. But as my career has evolved, so has my passion and purpose. Branding both yourself and your company is valuable. If you don’t know who you are, or what story you want to tell, you won’t cut through the clutter. My stand up career helps me connect with audiences, tell a story, get over the fear of failure, and celebrate successes. This is translatable into the marketing field that I love so much.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
Atlanta has definitely grown on me since my days growing up in East Cobb. It is establishing itself as a cool and connected hub. And it’s exciting to be here while the city is finding its identity. It’s a foodie haven, a creative epicenter, a tech incubator, and to top it off – my family is here. There’s always going to be something bigger – a bigger city or a bigger opportunity, but I have found solace in being right where I am and creating myself against the backdrop of a city that’s also creating itself.
