Meet Julie Wilson of Mosaic Photo in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Wilson.

Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I was the kid you’d find looking at old family albums or watching the same Christmas video from 1998 (for the one-hundredth time). There’s something pretty dang magical about reliving happy memories, especially with loved ones you’ve lost, and from an early age, I enjoyed that. I had a simple point and shoot camera growing up, but I didn’t really get into photography as a craft until I met Kyle, my future hubby. We met on the Berry College swim team in 2010, and over the years, fell in love over Jeep rides and ice cream. We were pretty good about taking phone pictures, but it wasn’t until Kyle bought me my first DSLR camera that we understood the importance of taking beautiful, high-resolution photos.

The first time I really used the new camera was on a study abroad trip to Ireland, a place where it’s impossible to take a bad picture. I returned home from that trip with a new passion for capturing my experiences with high-quality images, and as a couple Kyle and I started documenting all of our adventures that way– from afternoon hammock dates to road trips to NYC. We were addicted and knew this was an adventure to chase after boldly. So we started taking photos for others and Mosaic Photo was born. After we shot our first wedding in 2014, the same year we got married, we were hooked. Weddings have been our favorite to shoot, but we’ve also loved working with our couples after the wedding day as they’ve grown their families. We freakin’ love what we do!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
To be honest, it has been pretty smooth, and we count ourselves lucky for that. Deciding to own your own business comes with the whole “learning how to work for yourself” bit, but from the beginning we’ve been patient with ourselves on that. We know firsthand that there’s a learning curve to the world of entrepreneurship. Things like marketing, corresponding with clients, book-keeping, etc. are a lot in and of themselves, but they’re just as important as honing our craft as photographers. And trust me, a lot of learning has gone in on that front too. Being self-taught photographers, a lot of hours have gone into learning and growing over the years.

I think Kyle having a full-time job outside of photography has also helped to keep things flowing smoothly. We’ve been able to grow our business at a slower pace, without the pressure of it being our main source of income. Again, we feel pretty darn blessed!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mosaic Photo – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
From the very beginning we care about our couples and families, and we want that to translate into their experience. Also, we believe lackluster images and gimmicky poses don’t cut it. People deserve TIMELESS, RAW, REAL photos. That’s why we encourage authentic smiles, nose wrinkles and bear hugs – no stiff poses here! Ultimately, we want the pictures to be a true representation of the people we’re photographing, so we get to know them first before ever going behind the camera. After all, the moments we capture are part of a person’s legacy and the story they’ll tell the grandkids. So why should their story look like everyone else’s?

In terms of our style of photography, it’s simple – we create classic photos that are true to life. We love some of the fun edits people add to images nowadays (like that dark and moody look), but those edits aren’t a great representation of how the moment actually was. We believe you should look back at your photos and remember those moments the same way you saw them, felt them and lived them before. And that means focusing on true colors and real moments. We specialize in wedding and elopement photography, but we love capturing other special seasons in people’s lives too – from the moment you meet your first baby to that family reunion at the beach. Yep, we travel and love it!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re looking into adding more destination weddings and elopements to our calendar as a way to explore more adventurous love stories with adventurous couples. We ourselves love hiking, visiting new cities and a good ole’ fashion road trip, so since we have a flexible schedule, we figured “why not?”

Don’t get us wrong, we love our local wedding couples, so we plan to continue serving Atlanta primarily, but we want to add a few destination weddings in there to mix things up.

Pricing:

  • Weddings (2020-2021) – couples typically spend around $3300 on their packages
