Today we’d like to introduce you to Julien Anderson.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So a little about me and how I got started. 2011 in my hometown of Memphis, TN I began managing my first artist who was one of my homeboys. We hustled hard for about three years from me working and taking my check every week to cover his studio time to driving to Atlanta for open mic nights and showcases. After a while, I moved on doing my own thing and in 2015 moved to Atlanta, GA with $700 to my name. Upon moving to Atlanta, I started my first internship in February of 2016 at Soul Asylum Studios where I was a studio manager for about three months. In June of the same year, I was hired by Razor Sharp Records South as Operations Manager and head of A&R department. But that situation only lasted two months due to the company being shut down for legal actions.
About two weeks later was when things started to make a dramatic change in my life and career, I was hired by Twelve Studios as an assistant to Josiah Muhammad. Around this time, I turned down $105k a year as a store manager for Kroger grocery where I was working at the time, left my apt go and slept in my producer/friends small 2010 Subaru. We slept in that car for about a year together and bought gym memberships so that we would be able to shower daily. I spent about a year in a half at that studio working and becoming a better a&r learning up under his wing and during that time is when I met hometown rap star Blac Youngsta. Both being from Memphis he found a strong liking to me and saw what I could bring to his Heavy Camp label so after a show in Birmingham, Alabama that I drove to during his I’m Innocent tour I slept on the floor in one of his securities hotel room and the next morning instead of driving back to Atlanta I was hired on the spot. I left my car in that random hotel parking lot and never looked back.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it’s been up & down. Trying to establish yourself in this grimy industry isn’t as easy and simple as people think. Of course, like many things the hate level is at an all-time high. For me, I just know where I come from & what it took for me to get to this level so I went straight tunnel vision mode and made something out of nothing.
Please tell us about N’position Management.
I own an artist and production management company. I was just blessed with an ear for music. I just take my producer’s tracks and send them out. I go through tracks all day and put them in ordered packs according to what artists I hear on those selective beats. I’m known for having a strong ear for music. I’m a RIAA 2x Certified platinum manager. I signed producer TahjMoneyy in 2017 when he was 17 years old with only one major placement. Now two years later, we have accumulated over 35 major placements and are about to earn our 3rd platinum album plaque. We’ve also made 2 Billboard #1 albums back to back. I’m most proud to be able to say I didn’t take an easy route nor look for handouts. I met my business partner Melissa Keklak in 2018 and we just meshed well together. She handles all of my artists, producers, and our legal situations from contracts to negotiations she gets the job done! Basically, she brings in the bag. I’m proud to say I discovered hot emerging Houston, TX female artist @Kentheman who had a smash hit last summer called “He be like”. We’ve had many different labels contact and Melissa has sat with quite a few. She handles Ken while I handle a few of our male artists and producers.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would be just spending time with family. Now that everyone’s older with families and stuff like that we don’t really have that anymore. We were always extra close as a family and still is today everyone is just spread out in different cities and stuff.
