Meet Julisa Anderson of Hair Mistress Aesthetics in Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julisa Anderson.

Julisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Julisa, also known as “Hair Mistress”. You may be wondering why I chose that name, and it all started during a time I was trying to find myself as a woman and in my career. Aside from the negative connotation, mistress also means, a woman in a position of authority or control.

Born in New York, my family and I moved to Maryland, right outside of Baltimore, when I was 12. I’ve been doing hair and makeup professionally for a little over 12 years. I knew at a young age that I wanted to be in the beauty industry, so by the time I graduated high school, at 17 I had my cosmetology license.

Spending countless hours in the salon, working and gaining the experience I needed to become the renowned hairstylist that I am today. From a wide number of hair and makeup conventions to classes I attended to stay up on the latest trends. I take much pride in continuing my education, as well as maintaining the integrity of my work to give all of my clients what they’ve learned to love.

All of these things led me to owning my own salon at the age of 24, Hair Mistress and Company. With the typical problems of owning a business, I had to push through and learn the business from a different point of view. Even while owning a business, I still felt the need to do more.

Over the years, I’ve been able to travel internationally and nationwide for weddings, participate in fashion shows, photoshoots and any other event I could lend my talents to help the community that has supported me throughout my career. I’ve even had the pleasure of volunteering at a funeral home, doing hair and makeup for the deceased, which also opened up another avenue for my career. I’m what you consider, “Jane of all trades”.

Last year, I made the decision to pack up my things and move to Detroit, “The Hair Capitol”. Shortly after moving, I was blessed to find an amazing salon to work in, Studio Lush located in the Metro Detroit area. A luxury salon paving its way through the beauty industry at a fast pace, while giving me the support I need to excel in my career. During my short time here, I had the pleasure of competing in a natural hair show, and won being crowned as, “Detroit’s Natural Hairstylist of the Year”.

Most recently, I’m honored to say that I’ve started my very own product line, Hair Mistress Aesthetics. I launched the first product on my 30th birthday, MoonChild Curl Elixir. With all of the questions about my infamous curls, I wanted to create a product for all types of curls and coils. It can be used as a leave-in conditioner and curl refresher and has a scent that is out of this world. Not only will it enhance the beauty of your curls, it will strengthen and hydrate your curls, which is what so many naturalistas struggles with. I continue to strive to create products that suit every woman’s needs, from the price, to how they work, and how they make you feel.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of my hardest struggles was owning my own shop and having to learn as I went along.

Being the youngest stylist in the salon fresh out of high school, attempting to build clientele and establishing myself as a beautician. Moving to Detroit and completely starting over, finding a home and a job and fit just right.

Both are very similar to me and have made me so much more aware of my strengths.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hair Mistress Aesthetics – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
