Today we’d like to introduce you to Justace DeVine.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Justace. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like most young children, my career choice was a dream. I knew I loved Fashion and Modeling. I started sketching and cutting old sheets for my Bratz Dolls to wear. I was way too obsessed with ANTM (America’s Next Top Model) and BET’s RIP THE RUNWAY. My 8th-grade graduation project was on the famous Kimora Lee Simmons and her brand Baby Phat. Fashion was in my blood, my greats made there own clothes and accessories. When I found that out, I knew then that I was destined for a Fashion Career. In my 10th-grade year in high school, I was invited to go to my very first fashion show at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising), watching the show my eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas. I will never forget how that fueled my fire and I wasn’t going to let anything or anyone stand in my way to get my dreams.
Around 22, I was introduced to a man who changed my life forever. His name is Marion, aka Lil Whit, he helped me further my career by putting me on his team as his Fashion Stylist. The experiences I had were very memorable, but nothing lasts forever, especially when your dream is bigger than life itself to you. I took a leap of faith and moved to Atlanta in October 2018. I started working at Macy’s, UPS and a local grocery store. I still had my dream in my vision, but I had no clue where to begin again. I came up with a collaborative project that helps me and other talents to build our portfolios. I had that aha moment, and from there, I got to put all that I dreamed and visioned into play. SheisDeVine Styles was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My challenges were great. I would call them loses, but I don’t like to use that term, I prefer lessons. I dropped out of high school in the 12th grade. Without having a high school diploma, I couldn’t attend the college of my dreams FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) that altered my life path and decisions I made. I spiraled out of control, hanging with the wrong crowd and became a drug addict for three years. I fell into a deep depression and extremely uninspired. I got into trouble with the law landing myself with two counts of three years summary probation. That was my wake up call to stop the shenanigans and get back to what I love.
Please tell us about SheisDeVine Styles.
SheisDeVine Styles is a company that helps individual artists such as fashion stylists, makeup artists, hairstylists, and models build their portfolio by collaborating their talents. We bring these talents together once a month for a photoshoot with different themes. I am in the process of starting my own clothing brand, cosmetic and hairline to be able to provide all that is necessary for the talents to achieves what they have put together on the their vision board. I’m proud of being a non-profit organization because I live to help others achieve their dreams and goals. That solely alone warms my heart. I don’t profit from any of this and I feel that’s what sets me apart from others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck, well, good omens I like to call them. Good omens have come in my life because of the good deeds I have done in the past. I do things because it’s a passion of mine to help others and I get to do what I love, which is being involved in all things fashion. It’s a win-win situation!
