Meet Justin Ug

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Ugonna.

Justin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey started way back in 2008. I was getting ready to go to secondary school in Nigeria. I started as a dancer so I would perform in Church and at small gatherings. At the time, there was no Instagram Facebook so I’d post some short videos of me dancing on there. Later in 2010, When I had already gotten into secondary school, Instagram launched and a lot of people would always post pictures on there till they eventually launched the 15 seconds videos that’s when we started getting a lot of online comedians who would post funny skits that lasted for 15 seconds. From time to time, I will always post my dance videos, but they never really got any engagement, I continued posting and also trying out other different things. I went into photography at some point, videography, I made a couple of music videos for some of my friends, at some point I also started my clothing line, but this was just my way of seeing which I was more comfortable with.

In 2016 when I got into college, I started my YouTube channel, started uploading my dance videos, doing reaction videos and a whole lot of fun stuff. I was barely getting views or engagement for about a year plus when one of my videos when viral with about 600,000 + views after that, I started gaining a lot of subscribers, followers and that made me happy to be honest. I started getting comments like “you are funny, we need more of these videos,” so me being a very experimental person, I tried doing short skits on Instagram and that is really what turned things around. Making people happy has gotten me over 100k followers on Ig and over 200k followers across all social media. I can’t lie. It has been tuff doing this since 2008 without any recognition, but one thing I have learned is that you should never give up. As long as you are doing what makes you happy, every other thing will fall in place with God, I am a strong believer and I know God’s time is the best.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a mixture of both. Major struggles I would say were:
-creative block
-Friends not showing support
-People not believing in you
