Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahmia Dunson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kahmia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Two years ago I decided to leave Kansas, where I had been the majority of my life, to come live in the big city. When I got here, I wanted to be in the entertainment industry, and so I started to freelance model. It was rough at first but I finally met a man named M.A Davidson who took me in and showed me HOW to model.
From there, I started going to pangeas garden/Apache events. Where I met even more models and photographers. I soon realized that I don’t want to just pick one type of modeling, I wanted to do it all. Expressing myself in many different ways also helped me open my eyes to be the “modern Afro hippie” this is what I’m all about. Living carefree, traveling, crystals, and loving myself and those around me. Getting back in touch with the natural world inside a big city can be tough but I am determined. Now that I have the knowledge of photography and modeling, I want to start a whole platform dedicated to afrohippies. In a world where we can be anything… I want to be free and me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will say that my height has been a challenge lol. I tend to look tall in my photos when I’m really about 5”4. However, it has taught me how to work and use my body and the things around me to change the idea that you MUST be tall to be a successful model. Plenty of agencies have turned me down solely based on my height. That doesn’t keep me from freelance modeling and creating beautiful art with my peers and for my peers. When it comes to being an afrohippie some obstacles I faced is people trying to tell me that I’m not a real “hippie” as if there is a 100% textbook definition as to what a carefree, loving person can be. Living in a big city people tend to shun you for being yourself and expressing yourself and all I can say is… I can’t relate. BE FREE. BE YOU.
Modernafrohippie – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from others?
My brand is about being yourself and not being afraid to do so in the process. I also try to spread knowledge about spirituality and happiness as it relates to modern day problems. I talk about how we can help the planet and ourselves on my blog. I think that the world is so caught up in money, clout, and physical appearances that we have forgotten how to be kind and loving to those around us and to ourselves. I want to be that example that expectations from those around us should not control the life we truly WANT to live. And I express this through my modeling and through the posts I create on my page.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment for me is when I have someone message me, that I’ve never met nor personally know, telling me how my posts make them want to live a better life. They see me out in the mountains, smiling and talking about the beauty of the world and things around me and they start to see them the way I do. They see me talking about all the ways to be more kind to our planet and to each other and they tell me how they’ve implemented it into their lives. And I’m really happy when they can say that me doing what I love to do helped them take the leap of faith to do what they have always wanted to do but never could because they were either afraid or uneducated on the topic.
