Meet Kajara Nebthet of Ra Sekhi Arts Temple in College Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kajara Nebthet.

Kajara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been on this journey all of my life. In fact, I know that I am living according to my divine purpose because everything I learned in my early years to heal myself, I use in my practice to help heal others. I was always a magical, spiritual, intuitive being. I knew that I had divine guides with me and that I had healing power from the age of sixteen. I was diagnosed with a disease that caused me to be in pain for days at a time. I heard that I should put my hands over my body where I felt pain and to pray. I prayed and called on God in every name I had heard, I called the angels and any other forces that could heal me.

The next day, my pain was gone and it never came back. I begin to immerse myself in the rich history, culture and spirituality of Ancient Egypt (Kemet) and West Africa. I was initiated as a Sacred Woman and began to facilitate healing circles for women. I was initiated into an Akan house and received medicine to assist me with my path. I read a brochure about Reiki in 2000 and remembered my experience in healing myself with my hands and prayers. I knew I had to take a class to learn more. After my Level 1 Reiki attunement, my teacher said that his guides instructed him to give me all three attunements that weekend, which he did. I went through a three year period of cleansing, fasting, prayer, and meditation. I began practicing Reiki on others around 2003. In 2005, I became an Ambassador of Wellness with Queen Afua. I was certified as a Holistic Health Practitioner by Dr. Llalia Africa in 2006. In 2007, I was charged by my Spirit Guides to teach energy healing to my people and to restore the Reiki practice to its original form from Ancient Egypt (Kemet) as much as possible. I began teaching that same year in Chicago. I was initiated as a Priestess to Sango in 2009 and was then told to travel to other cities and share this info far and wide. I traveled to New York, DC, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Oakland, Jamaica and more teaching Kemetic Reiki since that time. We published our first book, Ra Sekhi Kemetic Reiki Level 1 in 2012 and have published ten books since. We have attuned over six hundred people in ten years and facilitated over twenty retreats, touching thousands through classes, retreats, books, videos, rituals and more.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When we began, Reiki was not a common practice. In fact, it was fairly new to this side of the world and we had to spend time educating people how Reiki, crystals, eating healthy, using sound and energy would bring balance and peace into their lives. Reiki is still not as well known as we would like it to be in our communities, however, the energy is flowing in a positive way. It has not been easy to start a healing temple and develop it into a healing movement for our community. We didn’t have a blueprint, so we have had some challenges, but overall nothing too bad. I’ve learned to balance my time and energy as a single mother, entrepreneur, Priestess, healer, teacher, author and more. I am thankful and have learned that when you are dealing with people who come to you for healing there are bound to be some challenges, but the spirit has a way of working things out.

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Ra Sekhi Arts Temple is a spiritual organization that focuses on healing our people emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically. We are the first to teach Kemetic Reiki which is an ancient healing modality that uses energy in many forms for healing. We use crystal therapy, sound therapy, palm therapy, aromatherapy and color therapy in our healing practice. We are known for our classes and retreats, and for changing peoples lives in a positive way. We’ve taught many of the healers who are practicing in various cities around the country. We help our people to heal from past lifetime and ancestral, trauma, drama, mental, spiritual and physical issues and more. Understanding that we have special circumstances that are unique to us as melanated beings, we know that our healing must be unique and specific to our needs. Many people talk about our issues and our negative experiences, however, we talk about how to heal from our pain so we can become balanced individuals. Our Kemetic Reiki books are the first books about reiki authored by someone of African descent, and our book Speaking with Spirit is the first book of African prayers. We are very proud to be leaders in the healing movement of our people.

What were you like growing up?
I was an only child so I read a lot. I played games alone too, although I knew that I was never truly alone. I dressed up as a gypsy when I was five or six and I dress in a similar way today with long skirts, many beads around my neck, long hair and a head wrap. I skipped the second grade so I graduated high school when I was sixteen. I spent many summers with my Grandma, and that’s where I learned how to make things. I loved to sew, crochet, paint and just be creative. My Mother took me to museums and the library often, so I learned about other cultures at an early age. My Grandmother and Mother were healers who served many people and they worked for themselves. I give thanks for their contributions to my development as a woman and a healer.
