Today we’d like to introduce you to Kameron Glasper.
Kameron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been singing since I could talk and grew up singing in the choir. It wasn’t until I took a Music Theory class in my sophomore year at Morehouse that I realized I wanted a career in music. One of my classmates made beats and I told him if he ever needed someone to demo any records, I would be interested. Long story short, I demo’d the song and changed lyrics to fit the melody better (something only a singer would understand). It was literally the spark to my flame. That producer was best friends with the little brother of Sounds (Skin x Rihanna, Love In The Club Pt. 2 x Usher & Beyoncé). At the time, Sounds was working out of the same studio as Tricky & The Dream. That lead to me studio hopping working with a bunch of different writers and producers. By my junior year, I wrote two songs on Tyrese’s Open Invitation album (One Night, All On Me) which ended up becoming nominated for R&B album of the year at The Grammys. My senior year, I went to LA for spring break, met Babyface and the same night we met we worked. He extended an invite for me to work out of his studio if I decided to move to LA. I graduated and moved to LA in 2012 which lead to me winning a Grammy with Babyface & Toni Braxton for R&B album of the year (Love, Marriage, & Divorce). From there, it gets kinda blurry but I began vocal producing and writing for a plethora of artists from Kehlani, Tamar Braxton, Keyshia Cole to name a few. In 2019 I co-wrote on Khalid’s album & 3 songs on Tayla Parx album. I have a ton of placements dropping in 2020, including a feature as an artist on a major label rap duo.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha. Hella struggles! I haven’t had the luxury of being signed or having a publishing deal to help me stay afloat along the way. I chose the path less traveled. I’ve gone through quite a few managers. Not because they weren’t good managers. I’m just a Rolls Royce and you can’t get a Rolls serviced at a BMW dealership. But I’m glad I went at things differently. My parents and mentors always taught me ownership so being in control of my ship is nice at the end of the day.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a Grammy award-winning songwriter. I write for singers & rappers across almost every genre in music. I’m most proud of being a college graduate while simultaneously following my dreams. What sets me apart from others is I’m unsigned and unpublished as a writer.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
When preparation meets opportunity, you succeed. I’ve been prepared and am constantly growing & developing so when opportunities come, I’m able to succeed. I don’t really believe in luck. Everything happens for a reason.
