Meet Kandace Layne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandace Layne.

Kandace, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started tattooing almost ten years ago in Atlanta, on my 18th birthday.. I used to go to the library after school when I was around 12 or 13 and found books on Japanese tattooing. I instantly fell in love! Both of my parents were interested in and created art, which also inspired me. I have so many good memories of bonding with my parents through creating art together. They always nurtured my artistic abilities and supported my dream to be an artist. I really loved to draw and wanted an artistic career but I also didn’t want to be a starving artist. Around that time, tattoo shows were also becoming popular and I noticed there wasn’t anyone who looked like me represented. There was Kat Von D, a woman…but really no Black women ever. Tattooing seemed like a way I could have the best of both worlds, make money and also get to be an artist. I got my apprenticeship in my last year of high school and would go to the shop every day after school until I graduated and then I was there all day every day. I had never had another job and my apprenticeship was unpaid (most are). I worked doing apprentice duties for the shop for about a year and then they finally let me start tattooing. I did my first one on myself and then many others on friends for free, until I was good enough to do walk-ins. I stayed at that shop for seven years and then moved out to Marietta to work at another shop, I stayed there for three years. In October of this year, I opened my own private studio called Magic Mirror Tattoo Studio. It has been amazing so far, my clients love the space, and I am looking forward to wherever this part of my journey takes me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road but I wouldn’t change any of it for the most part. There were times where I wish I had stood up for myself more, but it all worked out. Apprenticeships are usually hard and mine was no exception. My apprenticeship was free but I also didn’t get paid. I remember finding change in the couch or on the floor to take MARTA to the shop because I didn’t have another job. One of the shops I worked at, my boss at the time taught me how to drive. I didn’t have a car so I only got to practice for an hour once a week, I failed my driving test a few times and that was really tough on me because I usually a, just good at things without trying. Tattoo shops are also not the easiest places to work in and I have dealt with some racism and sexism, but I can’t really give details on that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist specializing in Indian motif/henna inspired/ornamental/tribal inspired work. I am proud to say that I provide quality tattooing for all skin tones. I can do colorwork on pretty much anyone…there’s a misconception that brown skin can not get color tattoos but that is not true. I freehand a lot of my work so it perfectly fits and compliments the body. I provide a safe and comfortable space with my private studio for women/femmes, people of color, neurodivergents, and LGBTQA folks. I also grew up in a Muslim household and I am one of the only tattooers I know with that background.

What matters most to you?
I really value authenticity, love, and good work ethic. I try to always honor myself and my family by doing my best at everything I do and treating others the way I want to be treated. I care most about my clients and how their tattoos make them feel. I want to make tattoos that help people reconnect to their bodies in a positive way or simply fall in love with themselves just a little bit more. Our body is our first home, our most permanent home while we are here on Earth, it is my goal to help people feel as happy and comfortable in their bodies as possible.
