Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanitra Davis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kanitra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started around November with trying out a recipe for strawberry popcorn. Of course once I made it, I posted it on Facebook. A young lady in Texas saw my post, sent me an inbox message asking me what else I could do. I told her, “I don’t know. I’ve got some Hennessy, popcorn, and some caramel. I’m off today so I’ll be experimenting” She said, “Ok, I want some.
How much do I need to cash app you?” I was so lost & had to figure out how I’d send her this popcorn. Well, when she got the popcorn she tagged me and the rest is history! By January 2020, I had to get a website. It was just too much of a fuss to keep up with Cash App and inboxes for mailing address. I started with one flavor and now I offer fifteen different flavors.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been easy. Sales were slow but those slow sales worked well with my full-time job. Then in June of 2020, following the death of George Floyd, my sales skyrocketed and honestly, I couldn’t keep up with the demand. I some days choose between making breakfast and popcorn. I make popcorn fresh so when orders poured in on the site, I just couldn’t do it as a one woman show. I communicated and most people were really patient. So that was a blessing. I got so much support it was crazy and I owe it all to God.
I work full time so somedays that job won’t let me great at popcorn.
Also, each flavor can take about 2 hours to complete from start to finish. If someone orders four different flavors of popcorn that can be 8 hours of work. I’m skeptical on hiring help at the moment. It’s been difficult to find reliable help and people just don’t put into your business what you would.
Tracking my spending was hard also.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about KD’s Popcorn – what should we know?
I offer gourmet popcorn with some AMAZING flavors! My popcorn is full of flavor, made in small batches, and you will not find it in stores. I can make a movie night magical! I also offer customized popcorn for baby showers, parties, dinners, gifts, etc.
I am set apart from the rest because I can customize labels and give a special touch to almost any popcorn flavor you can imagine.
KD’s Popcorn is known for our Strawberry Takeover popcorn which is a strawberry flavored candied popcorn, with Golden Oreos, strawberry wafers and a white chocolate drizzle.
I’m most proud of Banana Puddin’ Popcorn! Omg! It’s like your mama’s banana pudding with those Nilla Wafers and banana chips! It’s so southern. Like me!

I do have some support behind me. I have to give Melodie White credit. She manages my website, tracks my spending, places some orders for supplies for me. Melodie and I met in 7th grade at Wilkerson Middle School in Birmingham. She lives in Birmingham still and is a huge help.
Amber Graves in Killeen, Texas put me on the map! She put all my business out there and I had to choice but to perform.
My love Cedric names most of the flavors. He’s from Chicago so my cheddar and caramel popcorn mix, he named “Windy City”.
My son Taylan just thinks I’m awesome. He’s amazed that people across the country actually pay me for popcorn. I get a lot of support from the bike community and Blaze down in South Georgia lets me set up random pop up shops.
Kenitra and Sharhonda are my cheerleaders too.
