Meet Kareem Golbourne of Big Dreams Builders Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kareem Golbourne

Hi Kareem, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is one of resilience, transformation, and success—though it took me years to realize that it was worth telling. I spent so much time convincing others to share their stories, only to be constantly asked, “Why don’t you write your own?” The truth is, I never thought my story was one people needed to hear. But one day, while brainstorming a marketing strategy for my real estate social media, it hit me—my audience doesn’t really know who I am.
For years, I built a brand around my skills, hiding my true identity behind my business. I used my work as a lens through which I communicated with friends, family, and the world. But who am I beyond that?
I was born on February 21, 1991, in Kingston, Jamaica—a place that shaped me in ways I’m still uncovering. My parents couldn’t stand each other, yet, in their own ways, they raised me to be the man I am today. From them, I inherited my imperfections, my relentless drive, my humor, and my fight. And, if I’m being honest, a little bit of the instincts of a hustler.
Growing up in Jamaica wasn’t easy. My family was no stranger to violence, and I lost multiple relatives to gunfire. The trauma of those losses changed everything. Eventually, my family had no choice but to leave, escaping the same streets that had taken so many of our loved ones. I lived in Peckham, London where I went to School for 6 years before returning to Jamaica in 2000. Fast forward —I migrated to the U.S. in 2014 after meeting my children mother, it was a culture shock. I found myself navigating life in New York and later Philadelphia, adapting to a new world while still carrying the weight of my past. I became a father to my first son, and soon after, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life—I joined the U.S. Army. The military gave me discipline, structure, and a renewed sense of purpose. I led teams, operated heavy machinery, and even deployed on missions that changed my perspective on life. After getting out the military I moved to Georgia from Texas where I was based. I worked for Mitsubishi as a Millwright and purchased a family home in the first year out. Life didn’t stop throwing challenges my way. I faced a difficult divorce the following year, were I lost everything, the home I bought for my family and ability to have a consistent relationship with my children. A lot of personal trauma from divorce to fighting depression. But through it all, I kept pushing. I went back to school, earned my Bachelors in Business , and set my sights on rebuilding.
I decided to go to real estate school during my divorce battle, and to say the journey was rough would be an understatement. I was able to pass my exam on the first take despite previously failing the mortgage and home inspection exams several times.
Now, I’m focused on more than just personal success and feel like God made it possible to see beyond just helping myself and family grow. I started a Non-Profit for veterans and the homeless community. I’ve been where others are—struggling, uncertainty, feeling like there’s no way out. But there is a way. I’m living proof that you can come from the roughest beginnings and still create a legacy.
That’s what “Realest State of Mind” is all about—the mindset that pushed me forward, that kept me going even when the odds were against me. My story isn’t just about real estate or financial success. It’s about overcoming, rebuilding, and inspiring others to do the same.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The obstacles were many, being in a state with no family except my children. A whole country where both my parents and support system reside overseas. Rebuilding Solo. Pursuing a Degree at GSU in the middle of all thats been happening and transitions have been constant. Business is good because iv studied communications and marketing and reach out to alot of people and given support to others that have returned that. I have started a Non profit for soldiers and homeless community. Bigdreamsbuilders.org. Life is filled with obstacles but as a soldier we are told to soldier through.
