Meet Karick King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karick King.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For starters – I was never sure about what I wanted to do and what my purpose is. I had very linear objectives: go to college & work hard, graduate, get a job & work harder. After graduating and working in my field (Computer Science) for about year, I started the journey of figuring out what talents I had and how I could translate that into my building my own platform. I can’t sing, draw, rap, or wasn’t in the arts so it took some time to figure out what I could do. I decided to flip my perspective and put energy into finding the things I enjoyed doing rather than searching for my talents/gifts. This leads me down the path I am on today which is to produce open dialogue media, specifically podcasts and talk show series, via social media platforms.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s really ironic actually, my biggest struggle turned out to be what I want the crux of my content to be. Like I mentioned before, I had a difficult time figuring out what my purpose is. I’ve been searching for it since I was 14 but it didn’t start to weigh on me until I hit college. I was juggling academics, organizations, and trying to figure out what I could be. Coming out of college, I got a job in my field and the void amplified. I still felt that I wasn’t doing the things that I enjoyed. I wasn’t happy and very self-conscious about feeling like I didn’t have a purpose. During that time, I continued to do more soul searching.

Truthfully, I still question my purpose today. However, my tone is different. I am more optimistic as I try different things that give me the opportunity to do what I enjoy. I want to create platforms to help others who deal with these emotions and experiences. I believe that everyone especially, young adults, goes through moments of self-doubt, fear, and concern about walking in their purpose. I want to build platforms that provide a safe space to talk about those moments and how to get through them.

Please tell us about Jus Anotha Sho Podcast & The MicroDose Podcast.
I am a part of two platforms – the Jus Anotha Sho podcast & the MicroDose podcast. I play different roles on each of these platforms. On JusAnothaSho, I am a co-creator & producer. On MicroDose, I am the host. Both of these platforms are framed in open panel discussions but differ in a few ways.

Jus Anotha Sho was born out of the desire for friends who, once out of college, didn’t talk as often as we wanted. We have a GroupMe chat that was always littered with ideas and different perspectives on all areas of life and growing into adulthood. So I offered the idea of a podcast, where we would get together once a week and just talk. Unfortunately, a few of the members had moved away so physically meeting up became rarer. But then I found the Anchor app which we use as the medium for our podcast. Anchor’s platform allows us to record via phone call. Two years later we have over 4,000 listens. The show is our therapy, a way of keeping in touch, and we talk about various topics happening in the world.

MicroDose is a brand new platform that myself and 4 other friends of mine have been working on since March 2019. It’s geared toward bringing small doses of diverse topics that are just enough to be thought to provoke. The platform will be spread across different media platforms starting as a podcast with full YouTube episodes and IGTV content. We are going to be meeting up physically and producing content in front of a camera. It will be my first time being a host in front of the camera so I’m excited and honored to be apart of it.

My proudest moment is every time we get listeners or viewers. It’s kinda surreal to see people enjoy the content that you were apart of curating. We’ve even got direct messages from people who have given us praises and even critics on what we could do better. It also gives me assurance that we are doing something right. Even the negative comments are exciting because people are listening and compelled enough to comment.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I have a very simple answer to this question lol. If I had to do it all over again I would have started earlier. Specifically, I would have started while I was in college. I had more resources, proximity to my friends, and more time back then. But I don’t worry too much about that because I’m here now and having fun. Plus, it’s not about my timing. It’s about God’s timing.
