Today we’d like to introduce you to Karrie Bulski.
Karrie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
One Love Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization that was started in 2013 due to the need for more progressive ways to save animals in our local area. One Love utilizes a foster home based network – “virtual shelter” – with the support of the service of its volunteers. We currently have approximately 110 foster homes and 200 active volunteers.
Animals are pulled from a local kill shelter in southeast Georgia and placed in foster homes. Each foster home is fully supported with supplies and vetting for each animal that is welcomed into their home. Animals are fully vetted and training begins. One Love has a strong focus on special needs animals requiring extra care – heartworms, broken bones, mange and other medical needs and often they choose the underdog, the forgotten. We have a small hospice care within the rescue and will care for all our cats and dogs until the perfect home is found no matter how long this will take.
One Love works 100% off donations and fundraising with all money going to support the animals entrusted to our care. Many resources are consumed but we are blessed with the generosity of our supporters that keep our mission alive and strong.
We have branched out and formed relationships with many other like rescues in the northeast, and Midwest – areas of lower need – and have been able to transport hundreds of animals to safety. As part of the adoption agreement with One Love, we will follow up on all animals to ensure the proper fit and require all animals to come back to us should things not work out as planned.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The rescue road is never smooth and often exhausting, heartbreaking and defeating but it is thankfully met head-on with amazing volunteers and like-minded individuals that make it rewarding, empowering and successful.
Our main struggle is always the lack of available foster homes. With not having a facility, foster homes are the only way that we are able to save these wonderful deserving animals and sadly, there are never enough.
One Love Animal Rescue – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the co-founder and CEO of One Love Animal Rescue. My main responsibility is the support and medical care of all our cats and dogs. Vaccinations, medications, arranging veterinarian appointments and anything in between. I enjoy taking in the special needs into my home to love and heal their broken, neglected and abandoned bodies and soul and make them happy and whole again.
I am most proud of the team of volunteers that I work for. No one can accomplish this mission alone and I am amazed and restored by the generosity and compassion that I see among the others that join me in this journey and fight for these animals.
I believe One Love is different from the others because of our special niche to always chose the underdog and not the highly adaptable and easy to place. We always see so much potential in the cats and dogs who need us most.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is saving lives and seeing smiles faces from the animals and in the families that find their first pet or new family member. Success is being able to join a group of people to accomplish a goal. We are not focused on the number of animals that we adopt each year but rather the perfect homes that we find.
We have very few animals returned to us because we focus on a perfect match for each family making a successful adoption! Although we are not focused on our numbers, we have saved over 3000 animals in the almost 5 years that we have been established and I believe that moving in the right direction.
