Meet Kate Vaughn of Pretty Little Poses Photography in Canton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Vaughn.

Kate, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started off with a camera in my hand at the very early age of 4. My parents got it for me for my birthday along with three canisters of film. I am pretty sure I had used all the film up with in about a day, taking pictures of almost everything I saw. As I grew up I still kept that love of pictures and when I went to college I majored in graphic arts and digital photography. After graduating I headed to Orlando Florida with a job in my field and continued developing my skills in editing and design but moved away from taking my own pictures and did more of editing others work. It wasn’t until many years later when my oldest daughter was born and I rekindled my love of the camera. I would take picture after picture of my little girl and post a few here and there on Facebook. After a few posts everyone kept asking who the photographer was and if they could get their information to take pictures of their own families. And that is how Pretty Little Poses Photography was born. Now many years later I am a full service Photography studio and wedding photographer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Has this been as easy road? In some ways yes and in some ways absolutely not. The yes is because it much easier doing something that you love. If you have a passion for your job it seems to make the hard times not as hard. Starting your own business is not for the faint of heart. You will definitely sacrifice many things to get your baby up and going. I had the sell lots of personal items to get together the money to start this adventure. Also, getting clients is a huge part of any business. My first photoshoots I beloved I charged $50 just because I was scared to see myself as worth more. It is very hard to keep a business up and running and buy equipment with $50 photoshoots. Eventually I figured it out and came up with a happy price range for my work that makes it affordable yet keeps me happily in business. I even started the Wedding Photography side of my business with the money I was making from my Newborn and Family Photography.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pretty Little Poses Photography – what should we know?
Pretty Little Poses Photography specializes in beautiful stylized and non-posed family Photography. Any photographer can stage a beautiful family picture on the front steps of a home. What we specialize in is the storybook session with a theme or props that will take your family pictures to a family portrait. I have done shoots ranging from taking old vintage pieces of furniture out into the forest or fields, portraits with animals such as horses, bunnies and reindeer, using amazing backdrops found in nature and of course lots of natural light. I take time to set up a special theme with my clients. If your child loves his teddy bears then let’s do a magical teddy bear picnic, does your child love dancing, then let’s make a ballet in a field of sunflowers. Anything is possible in a child’s imagination and that what type of pictures I love to create.

We also offer wedding photography with the Pretty Little Wedding by Pretty Little Poses Photography. This is a full service wedding Photography package for your very special day.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely owe a big thank you to my very supportive family who did not think I was crazy when I wanted to quit my job and start my own business. Of course to God for giving me this wonderful life. I owe a very special thank you to my beautiful daughter Aydin who has been the guinea pig for all my test shoots.

A big influence in my work is photographer Skye Hardwick. I saw an image she had done online and fell in love with her work. I even went out to Texas to one of her workshops to meet her and learn from her. I definitely see a little of her influence in my style 🙂
