Meet Kathleen Brown of KBVideo Memories in Lawrenceville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Brown.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kathleen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started as a fun hobby when my kids were in elementary school. As room mom, I took all sorts of pictures and videos at class events/activities throughout the school year, ending up with dozens of pictures and no idea what to do with them. Eventually, I started creating a “year in review” type video and handing them out to everyone in the class. It was fun, and I enjoyed creating one of a kind memories. People seemed to enjoy the videos, and I tried creating other types for friends and family – a 50th anniversary, a memorial when a family member passed away, a birthday celebration for a friend. With each new challenge, I discovered how much I truly enjoyed the work, and wanted to continue. However, having been a stay-at-home mom for several years, I also enjoyed the freedom of being my own boss. It seemed only natural then to start my own business and work out of the house.

About 18 months ago, I took the plunge and opened for business. It took a while to get my first customer, but with the help of a website that connects consumers with service professionals, clients began calling. Since then I’ve had the privilege of working on a variety of projects such as weddings, anniversaries, memorials, sports highlights reels for high school students, gala events, even an actor’s demo reel. One of my most recent projects is a short documentary being shown on PBS in Hawaii, with the possibility of more markets in the future. Each project is a new challenge, and a new chance to tell someone’s story. I’m loving it!

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a challenging road. I’m learning the ins and outs of being a business owner as I go. Running a one-person business out of the house is definitely interesting! It’s difficult trying to keep up with all aspects of the business as well as taking care of the house and family. Getting this far has taken a lot of help and support from my husband, children, and friends.

The areas I struggle with most are finance and marketing. I’ve always preferred being creative to dealing with numbers. My husband has been guiding me through the financial side of things, and (very) slowly I’m making progress. Marketing doesn’t come naturally to me, and when several months went by with no response from my letters, emails, and phone calls, I was very discouraged. It felt like my adventure was over before it began.

But when I finally got that first client, and the next, and the next, I knew I could do it!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is video editing. Taking your existing video and pictures, I put them together into a unique video for you, your business, event, etc.

When you contact me, we have an in-depth conversation about how you will use your video, how you envision the final product, how you want it to look, and more. The finished video has to be something you’re proud of, something you want to use/show to people again and again.

Growing up, I wanted to be a writer. What I do is a form of storytelling, even business videos, and I like being able to help people tell their stories.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the Atlanta area is a great spot to start out. We’re a diverse city, with lots of opportunities. There are a lot of resources, if you take the time to look.
